  2. The history of America's National Parks On March 1, 1872 president Ulysses S. Grant signed the bill creating Yellowstone National Park at the headwaters of the Yellowstone River. Since that time 54 additional national parks have been created in the United States. The Alaska Lands Bill of 1980 nearly doubled the size of the national park system. Theodore Roosevelt stands with John Muir atop Yosemite’s Glacier Point in 1904. Content
