Nutrition. What do you think of when you hear the word nutrition ?. What is Nutrition?. Nutrition is the process of taking in food and using it for energy, growth, and good health. Nutrition is basically what we eat and how our body uses it.

  3. What is Nutrition? • Nutrition is the process of taking in food and using it for energy, growth, and good health. • Nutrition is basically what we eat and how our body uses it.

  4. Now that you now what nutrition means, what do you think of when you hear the word nutrient?

  5. What are Nutrients? • Nutrients are substances in foods that your body needs in order to grow, have energy, and stay healthy. • Nutrients are basically what is in the food you eat.

  6. Can anyone name one of the nutrients that are in the foods that we eat?

  7. The 6 Major Nutrients • Carbohydrates • Proteins • Fats • Vitamins • Minerals • Water

  8. Carbohydrates

  9. Carbohydrates • Carbohydrates are the starches and sugars that provide energy. • Carbohydrates are also known as “carbs.”

  10. Purpose of Carbohydrates • Carbohydrates mainly give your body energy. • Without carbohydrates our body would have the energy to function properly.

  11. Types of Carbohydrates • There are 2 types of carbohydrates: • Complex (Starches) • Simple (Sugars)

  12. Foods With Complex Carbohydrates(Starches) • Rice • Pasta • Breads • Potatoes • Beans • Corn

  13. Foods With Simple Carbohydrates(Contains Sugars) • Milk • Fruit • Honey • Added Sugar

  14. Protein

  15. What do you think protein does for our bodies? What types of food do you think contain protein?

  16. Proteins • Proteins are nutrients used to repair body cells and tissues. • Proteins are made up of amino acids and are found in most animal sources and some plant foods.

  19. Do you think that fats are healthy for you?

  20. Fats • Fats are nutrients that supply energy, keep the skin healthy, and promote growth. • Fats also help transport certain vitamins through the body and help build cell membranes.

  21. Types of Fats • There are 2 types of fats: • Saturated Fats • Solid at room temperature (remember “S” for solid) • Unsaturated Fats • Liquid at room temperature (remember “UN” for not solid)

  22. Foods With Fat • Butter • Stick Margarine • Meat • Dairy Products • Vegetable Oils • Nuts • Olives • Avocadoes

  24. Vitamins • Vitamins are substances that help to regulate the body’s functions. • Your body needs vitamins to produce energy, fight infections, and to help with other functions. • Mostly found in fruits and vegetables.

  25. What kinds of foods or food products do you think contain vitamins?

  28. Minerals • Minerals are nutrients that strengthen bones and teeth, help keep blood healthy, and keep the heart and other organs working properly.

  29. Types of Minerals • Calcium (Milk) • Iron • Sodium • Phosphorus

  30. Foods With Minerals • Different foods have different minerals. Some foods are rich with some minerals while some are rich with another.

  31. Foods With Minerals • Dairy Products (Calcium) • Meats (Iron) • Leafy Vegetables (Iron)

  33. Water • Even though you may not think of it, water is a nutrient. Water is a nutrient that we can not go without.

  34. What Water Does For Our Body • Water helps with the following things within our body: • Digestion • Carries nutrients throughout the body. • Removes wastes from the body. • Regulates body temperature.

  37. Food Groups and MyPlate • We are going to learn the different food groups and how much of each food group we should eat daily.

  38. MyPlate • MyPlate is a guide that is was designed by the government to help people make better food choices and to remind us how to eat more healthfully. • It contains five 5 groups.

  42. Fruits • Oranges • Apples • Strawberries • Grapes • Pineapples • Watermelon • Bananas • Fruit Juice (100% only)

  43. Fruits • ½ of your plate should be fruits and veggies. • Only fruit juices with 100% fruit juice are in this group. • Includes fresh, canned, frozen, or dried fruit. • You should aim to get a variety of fruits.

  44. Fruits • Teen Males- 2 Cups Per Day • Teen Females- 1 ½ Cups Per Day

  47. Vegetables • Broccoli • Celery • Tomatoes • Carrots • Potatoes • Corn • Mushrooms • Onions • Vegetable Juice (100%)

  48. Vegetables • ½ of your plate should be fruits and veggies. • Only vegetable juices with 100% vegetable juice are in this group. • Includes fresh, canned, frozen, or dried vegetables. • Try to get a variety of different veggies.

  49. Vegetables • Teen males – 3 Cups Per Day • Teen females – 2 ½ Cups Per Day
