  1. Writing Portfolios Decorate your writing folder with ideas, pictures, and topics that have to do with writing! We will begin the writing process today!

  2. Reminders (Block 1) Have parents check e-mail to sign up for conferences. Paper invitations will go home next week. All “Thank you Ma’m” mini-projects are due today . Study FOLI words- root quiz today!

  3. Bud, Not Buddy • Audio reading Chapter 18. • Reading Check- • How has Bud changed as a character throughout the story? • What characters have played a role in helping him on his journey? (answer in complete sentences) • Keep writing until the music stops!

  4. Current Event Connections After viewing the news from today’s video, write your connections, opinions, and thoughts. Write until the music stops! When you finish, double check your sentence structure, punctuation, and grammar.

  7. JUMBO FLASHCARD Using your FOLI root words, create a jumbo flashcard . On one side, write the vocabulary word and draw a picture that helps you remember . On the other side, write the definition and a sentence using the word correctly.

In your mind, want to say it but can’t, use your hands a lot, in order to write you have to write a rough draft, spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalization, anything you like, write a story, frustrating, reflecting, expressing your feelings, poetry, fiction, nonfiction, persuasive, informational, science fiction, language

What is a Persuasive essay? • A persuasive essay is a formal piece of writing in informational text that takes a position or stance on an issue and tries to persuade the reader to take their side. You will have a well written rough and final draft to type by next Thursday.   14. Writing Workshop: Stations Each group of students will work on a specific task dealing with writing. Each group will have a taskmaster who will hold the index card with all names on the card. Each group will receive points on the card for being on task, not talking outside of the group, and working quietly and collaborately.

  15. Writing Process : Station 1 (write in journal) There are five stages of writing called the writing process. Create a double entry journal page for notes on each: (record notes in journal around the room)

  17. Station 3: Persuasive writing (write on the paper, then glue into journal) Choose 1-2 of the questions. Answer each question with persuasive argument for or against the topic. Write 4-6 sentences and double check your spelling and punctuation.

  18. Station 4: Elaboration (in your journal) Read and add details to the Sample Sentence Starters (#1-6) Write a description of the scarecrow or Bud in our novel using descriptive details. 4-6 sentences long

  19. Station 5: Introductory Paragraphs (in your journal) Read the paragraph and decide what points the author will make in the rest of the essay. Write one topic sentence from the introduction on each question line. Work together on 2 of the paragraphs.

  20. Station 6: More Elaborating (in your journal) Add details to the sentences to make an effective argument. Add 2-3 sentences to each topic sentence.

  26. Persuasive Excerpt: Should we have Violent Video Games?          Screaming, punching, kicking, rage; sounds like an average day of a teenager? It should if you play violent video games. Screaming at a TV or Monitor because you died in the video game; that sounds normal? Violent video games are taking over teens and even some kids’ lives. Should we ban violent video games in this country? We should ban them because in this country, violent video games are negatively impacting children.

  27. DRAFTING • ADD TO YOUR PREWRITING BUBBLES THE DETAILS YOU LEARNED FROM THE READING AND/OR VIDEO • CHOOSE YOUR 3 STRONGEST POINTS(BUBBLES) Write the position like this: Video games have a negative influence on youth because (point #1), (point #2), and (point #3).

  28. Drafting: Boxes and Bullets • Now begin your drafting by restating your points with supporting sentences. • These are details and evidence that are directly related to your point from the videos, reading, or personal stories/experience. • Remember you are trying to convince your reader with logic and descriptive writing!

  29. Ticket out • Choose one of the “Exit ticket” choices posted. Write a complete sentence exhibiting knowledge of today’s lesson or a question about what to do next. • Reminders- Quarter 1 ends on Friday. All make-up work due by Wednesday(Root homework, etc) Parent conferences on Monday, October 29th.

  30. Bud, Not Buddy • Now we are in the falling action and resolution! • Chapter 19 • Choose your golden line from today’s reading and explain why you chose it in 2-3 sentences. • Epilogue • Choose a star rating for the book- 1-star weak, 5 stars- excellent- give your rationale in 2-3 sentences.
