  1. TEEN DRIVING FACTS • Traffic crashes are the leading cause of teen fatalities in the United States, accounting for 44% of teen deaths. • Approximately 7,000 teens die each year in vehicle crashes • Inexperience is the main factor in the majority of teen vehicle crashes

  2. PROGRAM OVERVIEW • Created in 2003 • Partnership with the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) • Developed by a team of safety experts

PROGRAM OVERVIEW (Continued) • DSFL helps newly licensed drivers improve skills in four key areas: 1) hazard recognition, 2) vehicle handling, 3) speed management, and 4) space management • Primarily web-based with on-line learning modules, quiz and interactive games • Free educational materials • Documentary for public television • Summer driving camp and ride & drives held across the country • Exhibits at various conferences

  4. FOUR AREAS • Experts have identified four skill areas teens lack and as a result are factors in 60% of teen vehicle crashes as: - Hazard Recognition - Speed Management - Space Management - Vehicle Handling Driving Skills for Life primarily focuses on these four areas

  8. RIDE & DRIVES • Conduct three to four a year • Two days = Four sessions of 75 students • Each session = four hours • Hands-on accident avoidance exercises • Taught by team of professional driving instructors

  9. ANNUAL SUMMER CAMP • 2006 – First camp at Michigan Proving Ground, Romeo, MI. • Over 600 teens and parents attended • Motivational speakers such as Lem Barney

  22. SAFE SMART WOMEN (S2W) PARTNERSHIP • Car care and maintenance targeted towards teenage females • Four car care/maintenance videos - Available in English and Spanish • Car Care Module – Teaches others how to conduct a car care clinic • Sponsor six Car Care Clinics

PARENTS FOR STUDENT SAFETY EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS (PASSES) • Reaches 50 schools, 35 school districts, 6,000 students • Teaches students important workplace safety information • Students win prizes and gain extra credit for completion of Driving Skills for Life learning module and a passing score on the safe driving quiz

  24. DETROIT FREE PRESSHIGH SCHOOL JOURNALISM PROGRAM • Students write on topic of safe driving • Top student essay from each school receives prize • Top three student essays overall receive additional prize • Participating high schools receive a reward

HOW TO GET INVOLVED • Encourage teens and parents to visit web site • List www.drivingskillsforlife.com and the DSFL hotline, 1-888-987-8765, in your communication materials • Identify and forward materials to schools or community organizations • Identify and share information with local governmental agencies, police/fire departments • Work with Ford Fund to create a unique DSFL program
