  2. Who is this and what is she famous for? Condoleezza Rice Rice became former President George W. Bush's second Secretary of State in January 2005. An expert on Russia and Eastern Europe, she began teaching political science at Stanford University in 1981. From 1989 to 1991 she advised the George H. W. Bush administration on how to work with other countries.

  3. Who is this and what is she famous for? Rosa Parks A seamstress, her Dec. 1, 1955, arrest for refusing to give up her seat on a municipal bus to a white man sparked the Montgomery bus boycott. This successful protest, which lasted just over a year, marked the emergence of Martin Luther King, Jr., to national prominence as a civil-rights leader and provided the model for future nonviolent movement actions

Thurgood Marshall He argued more than 30 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, successfully challenging racial segregation, most notably in higher education. His presentation of the argument against the “separate but equal” doctrine achieved its greatest impact with the landmark decision handed down in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka. He was also the first black justice on the Supreme Court.

He is also an extremely influential black author. His books include The Souls of Black Folks (1903), The Negro (1915), Black Reconstruction in America (1935), Color and Democracy (1945), The World and Africa (1947), and In Battle for Peace: The Story of My 83rd Birthday (1952)

Maya Angelou During the 1960s she was active in the African-American political movement with Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Her six autobiographical volumes (1970–2002), beginning with I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, have generally been well-received. She has also published several volumes of poetry, including And I Still Rise (1987). Angelou read her poem “On the Pulse of Morning” at the inauguration of President Clinton in 1993.

  11. Who is this and what is he famous for? George Washington Carver Born a slave, he later, as a free man, earned his college degree. Carver's efforts to improve the economy of the South (he dedicated himself especially to bettering the position of African Americans) included the teaching of soil improvement and of diversification of crops. He discovered hundreds of uses for the peanut, the sweet potato, and the soybean and thus stimulated the culture of these crops.
