  2. New International Student Orientation On behalf of our New International Students… THANK YOU!!! http://iss.uark.edu

  3. New International Student Orientation We, the Office of International Students & Scholars, truly appreciate your time and effort in welcoming students to the University of Arkansas.  We hope that this will be a rewarding experience for you! Again, THANK YOU!!! http://iss.uark.edu

  4. New International Student Orientation Please remember: • You not only represent the Office of International Students & Scholars[ISS] but you also represent the University of Arkansas and the North West Arkansas Community. • For some of our new international students this may be their first time away from home…so be friendly and helpful, you may be one of their first impressions of Americans! http://iss.uark.edu

  5. New International Student Orientation • Please read the pamphlet on Adjusting to a New Host Culture which can be found at the end of these slides. • Be respectful of their culture. • DO NOT use your volunteer position to promote other groups or events. • DO NOT get involved with financial dealings or contracts with students.  You may assist new students in identifying resources such as shopping, baking, food, entertainment, and other local services…only if they ask  http://iss.uark.edu

  6. New International Student Orientation • DO NOT offer immigration or academic advice. Refer them to us. Office of International Students and Scholars 104 Holcombe Hall Phone: (479) 575-5003 Fax: (479) 575-7084 Email: iss@uark.edu Website: http:// iss.uark.edu http://iss.uark.edu

  7. New International Student Orientation If you volunteer in a driver capacity you must have: • Valid driver’s license and a valid insurance • Good driving record • Viewing a driver's safety video may be required  • Please ask students to wear their seatbelt at anytime that they ride with you. Do not transport more students than you have seatbelts for.  Students may not ride in the back of a truck. http://iss.uark.edu

  8. New International Student Orientation • Keep students safety in mind at all times.  You are responsible for their safety while they are with you.  Do not do anything to endanger the students you have with you, even if it may be helping someone else. • As a volunteer do not offer or consume alcohol or illegal drugs during a university function, most of our events involve at least some students under 21. http://iss.uark.edu

  9. New International Student Orientation • Remember that there are MANY countries represented during our programs, which means MANY cultural differences - be sensitive to them!  • Some of the cultural differences may be: appropriate greetings, religious backgrounds, dress code, male/female interactions, direct communication styles verses indirect, types of food eaten, etc. http://iss.uark.edu

  10. New International Student Orientation Greeting: • Some students may not want to shake hands or be hugged. • Religious organizations: Students may ask you about campus or community religious organizations. Some are asking out of curiosity, others are looking for a group to join. Be sensitive of this difference. http://iss.uark.edu

  11. New International Student Orientation • When inviting a student to a particular religiously affiliated event or party, make sure that they clearly understand the nature of the event and its sponsorship. It is difficult for new international students to say no. Please do not put our new international student in an uncomfortable position. • Proselytizing is absolutely unacceptable. http://iss.uark.edu

  12. New International Student Orientation Dress Code: • Casual, comfortable, and conservative is acceptable. Remember there will be students who come from very conservative backgrounds and want them to be comfortable around our volunteer. • During our International Student Orientation events, we would suggest: pants, jeans, skirts, capris, long shorts and shirts or tee shirts. PLEASE AVOID: tight clothing, tank tops (broad strap ok), short shorts, mini skirts, torn jeans, low cut dresses or shirts, cropped tops. http://iss.uark.edu

  13. New International Student Orientation Male/Female interactions: • Absolutely NO flirting! • Flirting can cause cultural misunderstandings. We do not want you or the student to be put in a position that makes either of you feel uncomfortable. • Please remember that the student is going through a cultural adjustment period their first semester and can experience a lot of confusion. http://iss.uark.edu

  14. New International Student Orientation Direct/Indirect Communication: • Remember that many of the cultures we work with communicate indirectly (unlike the US). • Please don’t ask too many personal questions, be sensitive and watch for body language or other indicators. A student may not be able to say “no”. • Do not do too much for them, as they may feel “indebted” to you and not have the ability to “repay” you. http://iss.uark.edu

  15. New International Student Orientation If you recognize that a student is having a difficult time adjusting to life in the USA, please refer them to Matthew Sokoloskior Cynthia Smith, International Student Program Coordinators. You should also notify them as well if there is a student in need. They will help you refer them to the appropriate support services. http://iss.uark.edu

  16. New International Student Orientation DO NOT give immigration or work advice even if you think you know the correct answer as it could cause extreme problems for the student. The Director of the Office of International Students and Scholars, Michael Freeman, and the Assistant Director, Audra Johnston, specialize in immigration issues and work authorization as the regulations can change daily. http://iss.uark.edu

  17. New International Student Orientation What would we do without YOU? You are as important as our International Students. Our hope is to work closely with you in the near future. If you ever need our help, please contact us. http://iss.uark.edu
