Anthony Goicolea, a Cuban American artist, skillfully merges photography, sculpture, and set design in his provocative works. Holding an MFA from Pratt Institute and a magna cum laude BFA from the University of Georgia, Goicolea gained acclaim through his innovative self-portraits, notably the "You and What Army" series, which challenges themes of innocence and sexual curiosity. Influenced by artists like Cindy Sherman, his art captures childhood pranks alongside deeper emotional narratives. He continues to explore these themes in his recent drawings and sculptural installations.

Early Accomplishments • Goicolea first gained international recognition for his unsettling technique of arranging, within a single frame, photographic clones of himself in various poses. • His first “Multiple Self-Portrait” series, You and What Army, was produced in 1999. This series saw him join together surrealism and fantasy with poignant social comment.
Inspiration • Goicolea exhibits an obvious influence of Cindy Sherman, who also produces elaborately staged self-portraits portraying different characters
Overlying Themes of the Work • Although in his mid-thirties, Goicolea portrays himself, disturbingly convincingly, as a series of pre-pubescent boys. This allows the artist to bring a sense of innocence to his often provocative images that portray childhood pranks, often charged with elements of sexual curiosity and experimentation.
Newer Work… • Goicolea has recently been producing and exhibiting his drawings and sculptural installations, which include similar subject matter to his digital photographs
