  1. Social aspects of water in Hungary ‘When the last fish is eaten, and the last stream poisoned, you will realize that you cannot eat money’ algonquin indian oracle

  2. Hungary, the ‘Water Empire’

  3. ADVANTAGES Underground water storage, which can be used easily Huge thermal water storage Lot of medicinal- and mineral water wells Main income for tourism Important ecological role DISADVANTAGES The uneven distribution of water Used mainly for transit The quality of the water does not match with the EU norms. Is ‘weather-depending’ Water resources

  4. Hydrography of Hungary(Water resources) Hydrography of Hungary

  5. STRENGTHS A monitoring-system with 40 years of experience Improvement in the tainting of waters: - Less tainting by the industry - The water coming from other countries presents better quality Expert staff Stricter EU norms WEAKNESSES Shortage of money Places very far from each other The system is not prepared for the infections caused by biological- and micro taintors The quality of water arriving from abroad is difficult to improve The quality of 8% of the rivers and 17% of the lakes is not appropriate Tainted water

  6. Tainted water Pink: Arsenic Yellow: Nitrate Green: Iron Blue: others White: no tainting

  7. WEAKNESSES High defense and damage costs Dams out-of-day Extreme water regime → unpredictable floods Under-financed Floods protection STRENGTHS • Experts at protection • ‘Routine’ in defense • Advanced forecast system • River-regulations in the 19th century (canals, drainages)

  8. Floods and protection

  9. WEAKNESSES Oversized systems In some regions the sources of water are scarce or tainted (arsenic, etc.) Approx. 1200 small towns are not connected with the drainage system. Drinking water and waste water system STRENGTHS • Enough water for the country: 100% of the population is provided with drinking water • From sanitary aspect, the quality of drinking water is appropriate. Epidemics caused by water are not common. • Bigger cities’ sewage system is advanced. The ratio between drinking water system and drainage system is balanced.

  10. Drinking water and drainage system

  11. How did we use water in the past?

  12. How do we use water nowadays?

  13. Popular beaches: Lake Balaton, Lake Velencei and Tisza Lake. In Budapest (and other places all over the country) there are many thermal baths, which can be visited also in winter. Pipe-breaks Floods Drought. Rail-watering and packets of water distributing. Tourism, weather problems
