  1. Chapter 6 – Exploring Space Tate Falcon Science

  2. Section 1-The Science of Rockets • Rocket technology originated in China hundreds of years ago and gradually spread to other parts of the world. • A rocket moves forward when gases shooting out the back of the rocket push it in the opposite direction. • The main advantage of a multistage rocket is that the total weight of the rocket is greatly reduced as the rocket rises.

  3. Multistage Rocket • A multistage (or multi-stage) rocket is a rocket that uses two or more stages, each of which contains its own engines and propellant • A propellant =an explosive charge or a rocket fuel, that propels or provides thrust. • An engine = a machine designed to convert energy into useful mechanical motion (to move it)

  4. Boeing’s Multistage Rocket • This multistage rocket has a series of engines in each part, 3 stages.

  5. Section 2 - History of Space Exploration • The space race was a rivalry between the United States and the then Soviet Union (Russia, now called C.I.S.). • VS

  6. Section 2 - History of Space Exploration continued…… • From the first moon landing….. on July 20th, 1969, America has been leading the way in Space Exploration.

  7. Section 2 - History of Space Exploration continued…… • Space shuttles carry astronauts into space.

  8. Section 2 - History of Space Exploration continued……………. • Our last landing on the moon was in 1972 with Apollo 16.

  9. Section 2 - History of Space Exploration continued…… • A space station is a place for experiments. • Space probes study the solar system and beyond.

  10. Section 3 – Space & Technology • To help people live in space, engineers have created technology that provides air, insulation, and the ability to work in microgravity. • The space program has developed new technologies for scientists and consumers such as invisible braces, scratch-resistent lenses, memory foam, long-distance communications etc…. • Satellites are used for communications and for collecting scientific data.

  11. Section 4 – Exploring Space with Images • The electromagnetic spectrum includes radio waves through gamma rays. • Telescopes can collect & focus light for planetary images and satellite photographs e.g. Hubble

  12. Section 4 – Exploring Space with Images • These are some of the awesome pictures taken thus far….

  13. Section 5 – Space Exploration & Florida! • Yes, we have been part of the history of space exploration and continue to be a crucial piece of space history. • The space program has been a boon to Florida’s economy by employing Florida’s workers, using Florida’s businesses, and promoting tourism to this state.
