  2. Safety: • The state of being free of danger or injury • Always follow directions given by your teacher

  3. How do we stay safe ? • Always follow directions • Always follow the rules • Obey the safety symbols • Use equipment correctly • Follow correct procedures

  4. Safety Symbols Animal Safety • Be careful when handling live animals • Wash your hands well after handling

  5. Eye protection • Wear safety goggles when using chemicals, heating devices or projectiles • Avoid wearing contact lenses in the lab • If an accident occurs tell the teacher immediately and flush with running water for at least 15 minutes

  6. Caustic Substances • If chemical gets on skin or clothing or in eyes, rinse immediately and tell the teacher • In case of spill, tell teacher, do NOT clean it up yourself

  7. Chemicals • Always use caution • Never mix unless told to do so by teacher • NEVER TASTE, TOUCH OR SMELL UNLESS SPECIFICALLY TOLD TO DO SO

  8. Chemicals • Never transfer substances by sucking on a pipet or straw; use a suction bulb • Never return used chemicals to original container • Follow instructions for proper disposal

  9. Clothing Protection • Secure loose clothing, remove dangling jewelry • Do not wear open toed shoes • Wear a lab coat to protect clothes • If a spill gets on your clothes, rinse it immediately while notifying your teacher

  10. Electrical Safety • Do not use equipment with damaged cords • Make sure the equipment is in the off position before plugging it in or out • Never use an electrical appliance near water • Don’t let cords hang over table or lay across your work surface

  11. Explosion Safety • Use flammable liquids in small amounts • Never bring chemicals into school • When working with a flammable liquid, make sure no one is using an open flame, or heat source

  12. Glassware Safety • Check the condition– no chips or cracks • DO NOT PICK UP BROKEN GLASS, TELL TEACHER IF ACCIDENT OCCURS AND GLASS IS BROKEN

  13. Hand Safety • Wear heat resistant gloves when told to do so • Use tongs when heating test tubes • Always wear protective gloves when handling chemicals

  14. Heating Safety • Avoid wearing hair spray or hair gel on lab days • When heating materials in a test tube, always angle the opening away from your eyes • Know the fire evacuation routes • Always use the proper glassware when heating

  15. Plant Safety • DO NOT EAT ANY PART OF A PLANT OR SEED IN THE LAB • Wash hands thoroughly after handling • When outside do not pick wild plants unless teacher instructs you to do so

  16. Sharp Objects • Be extremely careful when using knives and other sharp instruments • Never use a double-edged razor

  17. Waste Disposal • Clean and decontaminate all work surfaces • Dispose of broken glass, contaminated sharp objects and biological materials in special containers
