  3. Unimaginable Truth • 149 million malnourished children in developing countries • 100 million children without access to basic education • 2.4bn people without access to adequate sanitation • 1.1 million African children under 15 living with HIV Source: New Internationalist

  4. 24 Hours a day • 24,000 people died of hunger • 6,020 children killed by diarrhoea • 2,700 children killed by measles • 8,000 people died of HIV/AIDS related illness • 5,500 people died of malaria Source: New Internationalist

  5. Life as it really is… • 1.2 billion people live on <US$1 a day • Every 3 seconds, a child dies as a result of extreme poverty • 50% of the world population live on less that US$2 a day – a staggering 2.8 billion people

  6. The bottom billion • 1 billion people live in extreme poverty • 1.2 billion people don’t have access to clean water • 50,000 people die every day from extreme poverty • 100 million children can’t go to school

  7. We can’t afford to…..?! • $7 billion is needed to provide 2.6 billion people with access to clear water annually • Less than we spend on perfume • Less than Americans spend on elective corrective surgery • 3 day’s global military spending ($4.5bn) could send every child to school for a year Source: UN Human Development Report

  8. The problem - poverty • Unfair trade rules deny poor countries £0.7 billion a day, 14 times what the receive in aid • Countries in sub-Saharan Africa spend £8 billion a year on debt repayments

  9. Unfair Trade & Subsidies • $1billion a YEAR on aid for agriculture in poor countries • $1 billion a DAY on subsidies of agricultural overproduction at home • EU dairy subsidy is $2.50/cow/day whilst 2.8b people live on <$2/day Source: UN Human Development Report ???????

  10. Credit Crunch Financials • $4.1 Trillion Level of financial loss @ financial institutions, IMF • $1 Trillion G20 promise to stimulate global economy • £175bn UK financial bailout

  14. Enterprise solution to Poverty • Economic growth is the fastest way to reduce poverty – China • FDI is critical to economic growth but requires political and economic stability, good governance – factors missing in poor countries • Social entrepreneurs needed to fill this gap

  15. TBN on the Ground • Circa 130,000 people impacted • 13,000 jobs created or sustained • £25m invested directly or indirectly • Target of 400,000 jobs in 3 years from existing projects alone
