Fun Facts • Name: The state of Washington was named after General George Washington. • Capital: Olympia • Date of statehood: Nov. 11th, 1889 • Population: 6,549,224 • Area: 71,300 Sq. miles • Nickname: The Evergreen State • Bird: Willow Goldfinch • Flower: Coast Rhododendron • Rock: Petrified Wood

  5. Famous People Seattle a chief of the Squamish and Duwamish Native American tribes wanted peace between the settlers and the tribes. He is buried on the Squamish reservation in Port Madison. Seattle is named after him. Hilary Swank was born in Lincoln, Nebraska and moved to Bellingham, Washington. When she was young, she was in 2 movies that won her 2 Academy Awards.

  6. History A Big Disaster May 18th, 1980 a volcano erupted. Mount St. Helens sent ash all the way to western Minnesota. 57 people were killed in the eruption. 250 miles away in Spokane so much ash fell it blocked out the sun. This eruption was one of the biggest in North America.

  8. Attractions One of the places you might want to go is Mount Rainier. It is the highest point in Washington. It is 14,410 feet above sea level! If you go to Tacoma you might be able to see Mount Rainier from the city! Mount Rainier is located in the Cascade Range. Map of Mt. Rainier

  9. Attractions The second attraction is the Cascade Mountains. They are in the Cascade Range located 60 miles (100 km) from Seattle. The Cascade range runs north and south.   10. Weather The Pacific Ocean makes the weather very mild in Washington. The ocean makes the summers cooler and the winters warmer. On the east side of the Cascade Mountains it doesn’t rain as much as the west. On the west side it rains a lot. Near Seattle, it could rain 40 inches per year. More inland there is a greater possibility that it might rain 100 inches per year. The weather in Washington is kind of the opposite of the weather here in Wisconsin. A rainy day in Washington

Englishman Captain James Cook explorers the coast and waterways. The Lewis and Clark Expedition reaches the Washington area.

  12. Timeline Hudson’s Bay Company establishes Fort Vancouver. Washington Territory is organized, the same size as the current state of Washington. Washington becomes a state. The Great Depression begins giving Washington a hard time. Mount St. Helens erupts one morning killing thousands of plants and animals.
