  4. 1910—Japan invades Korea • Remained occupied until end of WWII in 1945 • People of Korea were treated brutally

  5. Japanese Dominance in East Asia

  6. After WWII, Korea was divided at the 38th parallel. The United States supported the South, which became Democratic. The Soviet Union supported the North, which became Communist.

In 1950, after a number of small skirmishes at the border, war broke out between North and South Korea. • The US backed and fought with the South, and China fought with and backed the North. • After three years, the two sides fought to a stalemate and kept the country divided at the 38th parallel • 3 million people died, including 55,000 Americans

  9. The Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) The DMZ is a no-mans land between North and South Korea. It is heavily guarded by North Koreans on one side and Americans and South Koreans on the other.
