Lecture: Mining Mine: A place where minerals and ores come from..
Types of Mines: • Underground- A mine which are below the surface of the Earth. • Surface- A mine which removes the soil above it to expose the desired mineral below. • Surface mines scar the Earth’s surface, cover fertile land, and metal ores that are not used, are dissolved and leach into the local water sources.
Refining Processes Magnetism: The use of a magnet to find out if you have iron, nickel, or cobalt. Density: Separation of the dense minerals from the less dense ones.
Chemical: The use of a chemical to dissolve the desired mineral into a liquid. Especially useful if the mineral has a high solubility in a solvent.
Refining Processes Continued Filtration: The separation of a solid from a liquid.
Electrolysis The process in which a chemical reaction occurs when an electrical current passes through an electrolyte solution (A solution that has ions in it).
Refining Processes Continued Metal Displacement: A chemical reaction process when one atom or ion of one substance replaces one atom or ion of another.
