History • 1956 1st organisation for research in nuclear power • 1960 1st study reactor in Seibersdorf • 1962/63 study reactors in Vienna and Graz
History • 1972-77 construction 1st nuclear power plant in Zwentendorf (730 MW) • 1976 energy concept reached 3 nuclear power plants • 1978 referendum against nuclear power with 50,40% preventing the start of the already made nuclear power plant Zwentendorf
History • 1978 law against using nuclear power • 1986 Chernobyl disaster and the end of political efforts for using nuclear power Cost of Zwentendorf 1bn € Since Chernobyl a big majority in Austria is afraid of nuclear power!
Water power River power plant >10 MW Danube, Enns, Inn, Salzach, Drau, Mur
Water power Reservoir power station >10 MW Situated in the Alps
Pro nuclear power • Increasing cost of oil and gas • Run out of fossil fuel reserves • Less greenhouse gas emissions • Known technology
Contra nuclear power • Possibility for an accident • Final disposal for nuclear waste • Expensive • Greenhouse gas reduction is not high enough
Future Austria In Austria it‘s impossible to build a nuclear power station because of the strong refusal from the people. Austria must increase the budget for research of new alternative energy and saving energy.
Future worldwide I think now we have no other possibility, we must use nuclear power, but for the Future we must find a better way. No safe and clean energy → no future for the mankind!
