  2. An integrative summer school • Industry – academia curriculum collaboration • Center integration across all partners • Nurturing talent across the nation • Bringing together and building relationships among future leaders • Reaching out to underrepresented communities Gates, Meldal, Mitchell

Academia – Industry Partnership • Create a learning environment for graduate students from across the nation • Provide: • Silicon Valley industry best practices – internships at advanced technology developers and users • Academic rigor – seminar series with instructors from Stanford, UC Berkeley, San José State and Silicon Valley industry partners • Professional relationship-building in a living-learning environment – San José State on-campus accommodations • Financial support – Housing and travel stipends, internship salaries at the prevailing rate Gates, Meldal, Mitchell

  4. 10 weeks of excitement • June 2 – August 10 • Four days a week: • Internships with security-oriented responsibilities • On-job mentoring • 10 companies • Mix of technology and financial companies • Visa, Sun, Cisco, Yahoo, Google, eBay, Intel, deloitte, RingCube, Symantec • This list will grow… Gates, Meldal, Mitchell

  5. 10 weeks of excitement • June 2 – August 10 • One day a week: • Seminar series at Stanford and San José State • Instructors from • Stanford University • UC Berkeley • San Jose State University • Industry partners • Academic credit • Topics: • Intellectual property rights • Professional ethics and responsibilities • Surveys of core issues, concepts and technologies related to TRUST • High wow-factor research and development areas • Review of industry (best) practices Gates, Meldal, Mitchell

  6. 10 weeks of excitement • June 2 – August 10 • Seven days a week: • Shared accommodations at San Jose State • Shared learning, shared debriefs • Shared social events and excursions Gates, Meldal, Mitchell

  7. Assessment instrument • Evaluations by company mentors • Evaluation of academic course work • Post-evaluation by participating students • Follow-up for each cohort as they progress towards (and beyond) their degrees Gates, Meldal, Mitchell

  9. Leveraging TRUST • Information Assurance Capacity Building 2006–2008: CMU/CyLab – Dena TsamitisSJSU/TRUST – Sigurd Meldal • One summer month at Carnegie Mellon • Follow-up symposium at SJSU • Participants are faculty members from MSIs Gates, Meldal, Mitchell

  10. Information Assurance Capacity Building Program (IACBP) • Program run by Dr. Dena Tsamitis, Exec. Dir. IACBP • Detailed lectures in Security Engineering • Topics include intrusion detection, firewalls, systems design, intrusion tolerant design, biometrics, computer ethics and society, visualization • Curriculum Development primers and discussion • CERT Curriculum Discussion • CISCO network security boot camp • Participation in the Symposium On User Privacy and Security (SOUPS) CyLab has developed an intensive, month-long, in-residence summer program to help build Information Assurance education and research capacity at colleges and universities designated as Minority Serving Institutions – specifically, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs). This program is supported through a grant from the National Science Foundation, TRUST faculty and partners. Gates, Meldal, Mitchell
