Why stop work after 65? • Ageist and stereotypical beliefs dog the older worker • Life journey seen as pre-ordained • Youth (and education) • Adulthood (and work) • Old age (and retirement) • HR attitudes militate against employing older workers • Slide in physical and mental capacities • Slow to adapt to new technology

  6. Greying workers can continue to contribute to business and the community • What they can offer • Wisdom • Experience • Skills • Network • Advice to younger workers • We can make it attractive to remain in the workforce

  7. An active person is a healthy person

  8. We need to re-position older workers into jobs where they can shine • Everyone has a responsibility • Government • Employers • Trade associations • Older workers

  9. The government • It plays a crucial role in breaking down age barriers • It may finance or subsidise initiatives to encourage employers • It may regulate the job market and legislate against age discrimination

  10. The employers • They can create an environment and incentives that encourage non-discrimination

  11. Trade Unions • Enlightened groups will take the lead to promote equal opportunities for all age groups

  12. Workers • They have a duty to take advantage of training and life-long-learning opportunities offered by their employers to manage their own career
