  1. Rise Above Barriers Society Team MS Fits: Everest Base Camp, Nov. 2007

  2. Introduction Andante-Allegro Twenty-five years ago, Pippa wanted to trek with her two sons , Jasper and Ollie, in Nepal. That plan was halted by a two year ‘working’ holiday in New Zealand.

  3. Introduction Minuet Ever since, Pip has yearned to visit the Nepal Himalayas. Between then and now she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and as a result uses an electric wheelchair for mobility.

  4. Introduction Presto Her boys have never forgotten their mum’s aspiration. Finally they discovered a way to allow Pippa to hike – the TrailRider – and their dream of trekking with their mum in Nepal is quickly becoming a reality.

  5. Rise Above Barriers Society The Rise Above Barriers Society is an organization focused on rising above the barriers experienced through disability. It was formed in order to research, plan and implement a trekking journey in the Nepal Himalayas with a person living with a disability.

  6. Rise Above Barriers Society Our objectives are to: • Leave a blueprint of the journey to assist those who come next. • At the end of our journey, donate the Trail Rider to Recreation Integration Victoria. • Raise awareness about accessibility for those living with disabilities. • Raise awareness about Multiple Sclerosis. • Motivate others living with disabilities to pursue similar outdoor adventures.

  7. The TrailRider is a combination of a rickshaw and wheelbarrow that is pushed and pulled by ‘Sherpas’ at the same time.

  8. TrailRider Rise Above Barriers Society has purchased a Black Diamond model of the TrailRider to use for the trek. As a legacy of our journey, the TrailRider will be donated to Recreation Integration Victoria (www.rivonline.org) so others living with disabilities on Vancouver Island can experience wilderness parks and vacation spots with their family and friends.

  19. Meet Team MS Fits Pippa Blake The reason we are heading to Nepal to trek!! Pip’s love of life is contagious and is a big reason why we have a growing community supporting this journey. Who could say ‘no’ to a women who loves to sky dive and was carried by Masai Warriors on safari all while being confined to an electric wheelchair! Ollie and Jasper Blake As products of a childhood full of adventure, it is now time for them to give back to their mum who provided those endless opportunities. The boys with the big dream to take their mum trekking in Nepal – it is finally going to become a reality!!

  20. Penny GoldrickSelf-proclaimed as Pippa’s ‘I don’t care giver’. Penny’s endless energy at home gives Pippa the support needed to lead an independent life. Penny’s non-caring will continue on trail as she takes care of Pippa’s personal needs. Kristina RodyThe brains behind the operation. Kristina has jumped head first into planning the journey to make sure Ollie and Jazz’s dream becomes a reality. Though she could not do it without the support of others that have taken the lead on certain tasks that need to get done!! Karun ThanjavurKarun has taken on the important role of preparing the TrailRider for the trek. As a professional engineer who now studies the sky’s stars, he is working on modifications to the TrialRider to ensure it is ready for the riggers of a 3 week trek to Everest Base Camp and back.

  21. Jon MisovisWebmaster Flash!! Jon has created and is currently operating www.riseabovebarriers.com for Rise Above Barriers Society. With Jon on trail, we will be able to send regular updates as we trek to Everest Base Camp – that is whenever we can access the world wide web in the small isolated villages of Nepal. Robyn DavidPhysiotherapist extraordinary!! Robyn is working closely with Pippa to ensure she is physically prepared for the 3 week trek in Nepal – given Pippa’s level of physical disability and the realities of living with MS, this is no easy task. On trail she will be responsible for Pippa’s comfort as we move day to day. Shawn DanielsThe women that fell into our laps!! Her experience as a TrailRider ‘Sherpa’ through the Alpine Club of Canada is invaluable. Shawn’s quiet leadership style will be a welcomed addition on trail to ensure we meet our goal safely.

As a student of medicine, Nick’s skills and knowledge will come in handy. Not to mention his love for life and a good adventure!! Nik Southwell Endurance athlete extraordinary!! His ability to keep going when everyone else has stopped will keep us on our goal of reaching Everest Base Camp. His laid back demeanor will ensure that even the biggest problems will seem small and easy to solve. Judy Richardson Just retired as a physiotherapist and still teaching at the University of British Columbia, Judy will be assisting Robyn with Pippa’s comfort on trail. She has also taken the lead in learning about issues we will experience trekking at a high altitude. She will work closely with our Guide to ensure the team is healthy and strong.

  23. Doreen PeeblesDoreen will keep Pippa and the team laughing on trail. Her extensive skills with a needle and thread will ensure that our equipment on route will not fail. Most important will be keeping Pippa’s gear in tacked so she will be just as warm and dry on the first day as the last. Chris GoldrickAs a producer for CBC, Chris’ skills with a video camera and ability to capture a story will allow us to bring our journey home to share.
