  2. Collect cells in which DNA will be extracted from STEP 1

  3. Breaking the cells open by grinding or sonicating (the process of exposing the cells to sound waves and disrupting them) STEP 2

  4. In order to separate the DNA from debris and proteins, detergent is added or the material is placed in a centrifuge STEP 3

  5. The liquid and DNA is extracted and is precipitated with an alcohol STEP 4
