  2. Why would these countries want to establish colonies? Wealth, Resources, Power Why were people willing to live in a colony? • Religious Freedom, Landownership, Wealth, Power

  3. Mayflower Compact • This agreement was signed by Puritans sailing on the Mayflower. • Led by John Winthrop, they decided to govern themselves and make laws for the good of the colony. • This is the first self-government in America.

  4. Examples of Colonial Self-rule • First Legislature (Law making body) • Jamestown, Virginia, created the first colonial legislature called the House of Burgesses. • First Colonial Constitution • The first colonial constitution was the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut, which included a governor, a court system and an elected legislature.

  5. Salutary Neglect • England basically ignored America until the 1750’s, about 150 years • This hands off policy was called salutary neglect. • The colonists got used to acting on their own.

  6. Mercantilism • A country’s power depends on its wealth • More Money=More Power • Sell more goods to other countries than it buys.

  7. Colonial Troubles Caused by Mercantilism • Stamp Act • All documents required an official seal. • Quartering Act • Troops could stay in peoples houses • Tea Act • Cheaper Tea for East Indian Trade Company

  9. Response • Coercive acts/Intolerable Acts-people were put on trial without jury in England

  10. Colonial Reactions • Sons of Liberty • Leaders who rebelled against the Stamp Act • Boston Tea Party • In response to Tea Act, Sons of Liberty took action.

  11. Letter to your British Friend Assignment • Imagine it is the 1700s and you haven’t talked to your friend in Great Britain in quite some time. You decide that you should be a good friend and write them a letter. • In your letter write to them about the reasons you left Great Britain, what’s going on in the colonies (taxes, acts, Sons of Liberty), and why the colonist want to be their own country. THESE CAN BE FOUND IN THE NOTES FOR TODAY • Just like in a letter make sure you put a date in the top right, Dear on the left, skip a line and then start. Remember to sign it at the bottom. • This should be a page!
