  1. First Grade Science Essential Standards Training

  2. Let’s review your notebooks… Essential Science Standards Unpacking Document Crosswalk Document

  3. 1.L.1.3 Summarize ways that humans protect their environment and/or improve conditions for the growth of the plants and animals that live there. (e.g., reuse or recycle products to avoid littering.) What’s new in Life Science? 1.L.1.1 Recognize that plants and animals need air, water, light (plants only), space, food and shelter and that these may be found in their environment. 1.L.1.2 Give examples of how the needs of different plants and animals can be met by their environments in North Carolina or different places throughout the world.

  4. Racing to Recycle Divide the class into two groups. Give each group a bag of “trash” (Make sure trash has been washed ahead of time.) Possible items to include are: Paper, soda cans, plastic bottles, soup cans, box, newspaper, grocery bag, milk carton, diaper (clean!), styrofoam cups, brown envelopes, waxed paper, plastic wrap, plastic toys, and food. To play, students stand in two lines facing their own trash can and recycle bin across the room. Their “trash bag” is next to the cans. Students race to the front of the room, relay style, to sort the trash. The first group to sort their trash correctly wins.

  5. Crayon Creations

  6. 1. Remove all wrappers from your old crayons and break the crayons into small pieces. 2. Place pieces in a muffin tin (you can use any shape you choose) and bake at 275F for about 15 minutes (until all the crayons are melted). 3. Remove from oven and allow to set completely, at least 1 hour. 4.Enjoy your new crayons! Directions for creating kid-friendly crayon shapes:

  7. Serving Up Styrofoam Trays:What is First Grade’s Global Footprint? Science Essential Standard Objective: 1.L.1.3 ELA Common Core Objective: W.1.1

  8. 1.L.1.2:Give examples of how the needs of different plants and animals can be met by their environments in North Carolina or different places throughout the world. 1.E.2.2 Compare the properties of soil samples from different places relating their capacity to retain water, nourish and support the growth of certain plants.
