  2. Introduction • Community Transport services are provided by not-for-profit organisations, some of which work in partnership with the Local Transport Authority. They are for use by individuals who: • Have mobility impairments • Are frail & elderly • Are isolated in other ways • Community transport services can also serve the general public where no public transport exists and no personal transport is available.

  3. What is Community Transport? Ring & Ride – 16 schemes • Demand responsive transport services provided by not-for-profit organisations in partnership with the Local Transport Authority, in most cases specifically for use by individuals who have mobility impairments, are frail & elderly or are isolated in other ways. Services generally operate within the respective town or city where the service is based and in the surrounding hinterland.   4. What is Community Transport? Shopmobility 9 schemes • Mobility scooter hire provided by not-for-profit organisations most in partnership with the Local Transport Authority. Public bus services provided by not-for-profit organisations, often serving routes which are not economically viable for profit-making public transport operators. Generally run by volunteer drivers. • Community Car Schemes over 60 schemes. Volunteer drivers offering journeys for people in need

Economic circumstances • Community transport is delivered by charitable organisations, funding is generated by: • Fund-raising (like any other charity) • Small payments by those who use the service • Economic planning in CT is often constrained to the here and now • Problems in securing on going funding makes planning for the ‘next five years’ difficult

Planning for community transport Development policies • Need to ensure that development policies enable contributions from development towards community transport facilities as appropriate Infrastructure Planning • Infrastructure schedules should take into account the requirements for community transport groups enabling patient access to Health Facilities
