  1. Pick up your WEEKLY HOMEWORK and Skill Builder # 29! • Turn in Builder 28 to tray along with your extra credit. • Copy down your AGENDA for the week. • Complete the first 2 sections of your SKILL BUILDER

  3. Slope You need your JOURNAL out for NOTES!

  4. Slopes (or steepness) of lines are seen everywhere.

  5. The steepness of the roof of a house is referred to as the pitch of the roof by home builders.

  6. Give one reason why some homes have roofs which have a greater pitch. There is less snow build up in the wintertime.

  7. Engineers refer to the slope of a road as the grade.

  8. They often refer to the slope as a percentage.

  9. Objectives • To learn what slope is • To learn what a line looks like when it has positive, negative, zero or undefined slope • To learn how to find the slope of a graph • To learn how to find the slope given 2 points • To learn how to find the slope of a table

  10. Rise over run

  11. Slopes and Lines rise run The slope of a line is the steepnessof the line.

  12. What is Slope? Slope is the rate of change of a line (change in y) (change in x)

  13. 8 100 A grade of 8% would mean for every run of 100 units, there is a rise of 8 units. = 8%

  14. Determine the slope of the line. 5 cm 9 cm We use the letter m because in French the word for “to go up” is monter. Because the slope is a ratio, there are no units such as cm or cm2.

  15. Determine the slope (pitch) of the roof. 5 m 3 m

  16. Determine the slope of the staircase. 2 3 3 3

  17. 9 3 Determine the slope. 12 10 8 6 4 2 0 2 4 8 6 10 14 12

  18. – 5 7 Determine the slope. 12 10 8 6 4 2 12 0 4 8 6 10 14 2

  19. 7 Determine the slope. 12 10 8 6 4 2 Horizontal lines have a slope of zero. 0 2 4 8 6 10 14 12

  20. 6 Determine the slope. 12 10 8 6 4 Vertical lines have slopes which are undefined. 2 0 2 4 8 6 10 14 12

  21. negative positive undefined zero Summary: Types of Slopes

  22. What does the line look like when… • You have positive slope? • You have negative slope? • You have zero slope? 0 0 • You have NO slope?

  23. Positive slope, + work Negative slope, - work Zero slope is zero fun! NO slope. Oh No!!!! Slope Mountain Ski Resort T. Merrill 2005

  24. What Type of Slope is Shown? Positive Slope Negative Slope Zero Slope No Slope/Undefined

  25. Determine the slope of this line. Which points will you use to determine rise and run? 40 5 = 8

  26. Determine the slope of the line segment. –2 60

  27. Draw a line which has a slope of Draw a line which has a slope of 2

  28. Draw a line which has a slope of –5 6 –5 6

  29. Draw a line which has a slope of… b) 3 a) – 3 1 –3 3 1 1 –3 3 1

  30. Slope of a Graph • When slope is positive or negative we need to find the actual value of the slope or rate of change • On a graph we find slope using the formula How far up or down it changes How far left or right it changes

  31. Slope of a Graph • First pick two points on the line • The points need to be where the lines cross so they are integers • 2. Then find the rise and run • 3. Determine if the slope of the line is positive or negative Rise = 2 Run = 3

  32. Slope of a Graph • First pick two points on the line • The points need to be where the lines cross so they are integers • 2. Then find the rise and run • 3. Determine if the slope of the line is positive or negative (1, 6) Rise = 10 (-1, -4) Run = 2

  33. y x Slope of a Graphed Line Find the slope of each line below Slopes: Find the slope of each line below 4 4

  34. Find the slopes of the cards # 1-8. Use rise over run.Find the slope of ALL 8 lines! You will turn this in for a grade!
