  1. Welcome, Scholars! Please go to my netschool page to download this week’s Article of the Week. If you need a paper copy, fill out the missing supplies form on the stool in the green box and bring it to me. If you didn’t finish your final copy of last week’s narrative, please get it off the back table. I owe you 20 minutes if you did QRI for me last week. You may complete it now, and your Article of the Week will be homework.

  2. Today’s Plan • I will be pulling students today for QRI. When you see this no one in the room should be talking. If I don’t have to ask you to be quiet one time today, your class will earn 5 POMS! The PowerPoint will guide you through the lesson. It is also on netschool if the PowerPoint moves too fast. You will hear a sound when the slide changes!

  3. You have 20 minutes… • You may either complete your final copy of last week’s narrative... • OR • work on your Article of the Week. • Your Article of the Week instructions: • You must write a minimum of 5 sentences on a notecard (in the bag) responding to one of the topics at the bottom of the article. Starting this week, you will be graded on writing complete sentences with capital letters and correct ending punctuation. This is due for everyone when you walk into class on Friday. It is worth 10 points on the Quizette! • At the end of 20 minutes, there will be a change of the PowerPoint slide, and a horn. Then you will follow the directions on the next slide.

  4. Objective: Students are expected to understand, make inferences, and draw conclusions about the structure and elements of poetry and provide evidence from text to support their understanding. • Learning Target: I will determine the tone of Tupac’s poem and create an original tone poem. • Success Criteria: I know I’ll have it when I can shift the tone in my original poem at least four times.

  5. Poetry Pre Assessment • You should have picked one up from the cart. • Put your name on it. • You have 3 minutes to silently list as many terms associated with poetry as you can think of.

  6. You have 2 minutes to share with your table. • Fill in any letters you left blank.

  7. You have 5 minutes to take care of this… 1) Update your Table of Contents! Date: 10/14/14 Title: Poetry and Tone • Glue in your Poetry Pre Assessment • Copy these notes. A poem’s tone can best be described as the poem’s attitude toward the subject matter. A poem’s tone always exists, and it can shift in a poem.

  8. Discuss with your table what you think the tone is of the following stanza. • “There is a Reaper whose name is Death, • And, with his sickle keen, • He reaps the bearded grain at a breath, • And the flowers that grow between.” • Henry Wadsworth Longfellow “The Reaper and the Flowers”

  9. Possible Answer? • threatening

  10. Discuss with your table what you think the tone is of the following stanza. • “She walks in beauty, like the night • Of cloudless climes and starry skies, • And all that’s best of dark and bright • Meets in her aspect and her eyes.” • Lord Byron, “She Walks in Beauty Like the Night”

  11. Possible Answer? • fondness

  12. Discuss with your table what you think the tone is of the following stanza. • “Hear the mellow wedding bells, • Golden bells! • What a world of happiness their harmony foretells! • Through the balmy air of night • How they ring out their delight.” • Edgar Allan Poe, “The Bells”

  13. Possible Answer? • joy

  14. You have 5 minutes… • Choose one of the words below. Write three sentences about the word to convey tone on one of the notecards provided. You will turn this in at the end of the period. Please write the word you choose on one side and write your three sentences on the other side. Also, include everyone’s name in your group. You can create a setting, describe a person, etc. Whatever you do, it needs to be clear when your sentences are read aloud what the tone is for each piece. • Gloomy • Childish • Excited • Conceited

  15. Today’s Poet • Who is the poet of today’s poem? • Tupac Shakur was one of the most high profile, successful rap artists of all time. As a performer he crossed racial, ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic lines. His work touched millions. As an artist, Tupac spoke with a sense of urgency in the name of those who could not speak for themselves. His work still vibrantly lives on today.

  16. Grab a copy of Tupac’s poem. • Read the poem “When Ure Hero Falls – 4 My Hero” as many times as you can until the slide changes. You have 5 minutes. Begin reading!

  17. Now grab a copy of the questions for today. • You have the rest of the period (20 minutes) to complete questions 1-3 using Tupac’s poem. Yes, you may work with your group. Yes, this is for a grade!
