  2. Religion Hey Guys!! My name is Chastity. I am here to talk you today about a little something called Religion. WHAT IS RELIGION?

Religion THE DEFINITION OF RELIGION IS: a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.

  4. Religion In other words, it is a specific set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects.

  5. Religion What are some religions that you know of?

  6. Religion Great!! All that you mentioned are definitely religions. There are many different types of religions throughout the world. Some are more common than others. Can you name the most common religions throughout the world?

  7. The top ten religions throughout the world include… Christianity– 2.1 bil Islam– 1.3 billion Hinduism– 851 mil Buddhism—375 mil Sikhism– 25 million Judaism– 15 million Baha’ism --- 7.5 mill 8. Confucianism– 6.4 mil 9. Jainism– 4.5 mill 10. Shintoism--- 2.8 million Religion

  8. Religion Some religions worship one god. These types of religions are calledMONOTHEISTIC. THIS MEANS TO BELIEVE IN ONE GOD.

  9. Religion OTHER RELIGIONS BELIEVE IN MORE THAN ONE GOD. THESE RELIGIONS ARE POLYTHEISTIC.

  10. Religion Many of the Religions have their own books that are specific to their religions. These books contain important information about their beliefs and how to conduct their lives. Judaism=Torah Hinduism= Vedas Christianity=Bible Islam= Koran

  11. Religion Each religion may have different beliefs and practices. Some may believe in a certain god/s while others do not believe in any god at all. Religions may also be different in how the people conduct their lives and practices.

  12. Religion CAN YOU DESCRIBE SOME BELIEFS AND PRACTICES OF VARIOUS RELIGIONS?

  13. Religion Throughout the next few weeks, you will be studying three major world religions. Judaism ,Christianity & Islam will be your first focus on religion. As we study each religion it is important to keep an open mind.

  14. Religion What does it mean to be Tolerant?

  15. Religion Tolerance means: a fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward those whose opinions, practices, race, religion, nationality, etc., differ from one's own; freedom from bigotry.

  16. Religion In other words, don’t be trippin’ if someone thinks or believes differently than you. Respect is the key word!

  17. Religion Okay, I am going to have to check you guys out later. I have a lot of studying to do. Remember learning about how others do things can be interesting. Keep an open mind!! Let’s watch a BrainPop on religion…..
