  1. Structures & Strategies

  2. Identification of Strengths and Weaknesses Roles and Relationships • The success of any strategy will depend on effective performance of individuals. It’s essential each player has a clear picture of their performance in a number of key areas. • For example, you should possess many of the role related technical skills necessary to play a particular position effectively.

  3. Roles & Relationships • You should also possess the appropriate physical and mental skills for meeting the specific positional responsibilities. • Additionally, you must demonstrate good teamwork and recognise how your role relates to your team mates . • Each player has a specific role to perform with different responsibilities when in offence and defence.

  4. Roles & Relationships • They have to work co-operatively with each other to ensure that their strategy is effective. • For example, the player bringing the ball up the middle on a fast break, must move the ball quickly and safely up the court, communicate with team mates, play the correct pass at correct time and then support the attack.

  5. Question • Discuss what you feel to be your personal strengths and weaknesses when performing the fast break as a guard or a centre in relation to roles and relationships. (4) • Write 50 – 100 words

  6. Positions • Guards • Centre • Forwards

  7. Guards • Usually smallest in team • Quickest players in team • Excellent ball handling skills • Have good long range shooting ability • Have vision and creativity to play the most suitable pass at the correct time • Control tempo of the game and set up the majority of offences

  8. Forwards • Taller players in team • Have high upper body strength • Excellent rebounding skills • Have good close range shooting ability • High C.V. Endurance to go from basket to basket (defence to offence)

  9. Centre • Tallest player in team • Excellent defensive/ blocking skills • Excellent rebounding skills • Have good close range shooting ability • High C.V. Endurance to go from basket to basket (defence to offence)

  10. Question • What position do you feel would best suit you, and why? • Give examples of the strengths you could bring to your team when playing in that role. (4) • Write 50 – 100 words

  11. Tactics • As part of your game plan, you will include the use of tactics. 'Tactics' are quite simply the variations of play used within a strategy. • The overall aim of a tactic is to play to your individual strengths whilst attempting to exploit your opponents’ weaknesses.

  12. Tactics • Tactics offer variation in play and are often well rehearsed during practice sessions. This is important for a number of reasons: • it consolidates the role that each player has to perform • it ensures an almost 'automatic' performance • it enables variations within the same tactic to be used should a change • or adaptation be required.

  13. Homework – 05/09/11 • Make sure you are familiar with • Workbook p2-13. • Choose an attacking strategy you have started to develop in Basketball. Describe that attacking strategy (4).
