  2. The Symbol! • The White Rose of Yorkshire (seen below) is the symbol for the House of York, but it’s become the symbol of Yorkshire (Where Wakefield is) since. Traditionally the origins of the emblem are said to go back to Edmund of Langley in the fourteenth century, the first Duke of York. Also the Yorkist rose is white in colour, because in Christian (the main religion of England) liturgical symbolism, white is the symbol of light, typifying innocence and purity, joy and glory.

OTHER STUFF IT’S BEEN USED IN! • The White Rose was used in the 15th century English civil war, The Wars Of The Roses ( A name that was created in the 19th century) as the symbol of the soldiers representing the House of York, in battle against the soldiers representing the House of Lancaster. (Who used a red rose symbol, creating the war’s name) • The symbol is used to represent the Yorkshire County now, and is on items from a simple fridge magnet, to the uniform of the Leeds Football team!
