  3. When you are asked to explain a word, tradition, holiday, etc. you are asked to give a definition or explanation. These kinds of questions ask you to define or explain something. When you write about this, they become definition paragraphs. Definition Paragraphs

  4. Please turn to page 127 and let’s read the paragraph explaining courage. Definition Paragraphs

  5. When we write topic sentences for definition paragraphs, we might give three pieces of information: The word or thing you will define or explain (the topic) The large category or group to which the word or thing belongs The distinguishing characteristics that make it different from other members of the category Topic Sentences

  6. Looking back at the model paragraph about courage, what are the three parts of the topic sentence? Look for the topic, category/group, and distinguishing characteristics. The Model Paragraph

  7. When writing the supporting sentences for a definition paragraph: • Add details that explain the topic more completely • Give additional facts telling who, what, where, when, how, or why • Give an explanation of a process, examples, or a description Supporting Sentences

  8. When writing the concluding sentence for a definition paragraph, you may tell why the topic is important, interesting, or unique (why it is different from something else). Let’s work on practice 1 to practice writing the topic sentences for definition paragraphs on page 128. Concluding Sentence

  9. Please prepare a rough draft of a definition paragraph following the instructions on page 143. You should bring TWO COPIES of the rough draft: one for you to use in class with your partner and one for me. Homework
