SOL Standards • 2.2- TSW compare the lives and contributions of American Indians (First Americans) with emphasis on the Powhatan of the Eastern Woodlands, the Sioux of the Plains, and the Pueblo people of the Southwest. • 2.4 –TSW develop map skills by locating the regionsof the Powhatan, Sioux, and Pueblo Indians on U.S. maps; compare the climate, land, and plant life of these regions; describe how people in these regions adapt to their environment. • 2.8- TSW demonstrate comprehension of fiction and non- • fiction selections. NQ- Creates visual or other sensory images • from text during and after reading. • 2.9- TSW write stories, letters, and simple explanations. NI- Write simple paragraphs, and reports. • CT 2.2N- TSW develop basic technology skills.

Content Objectives • Compare and contrast differing sets of ideas. • Gather, classify, and interpret information. • Construct and explain simple charts. • Collect, organize, and record information. • Locate areas regions on maps and globes. • Locate and use information from print and non-print sources.

  4. Lesson 1 Sol Objective: 2.8- TSW demonstrate comprehension of fiction and nonfiction selections. Lesson 1 Without Technology: TTW read Children of the Earth and Sky by Stephen Krensky and Indians of the Northeast Woodlands by Beatrice Siegel. TSW answer questions about each group on a worksheet. Lesson 1 Technology-Infused: TSW answer questions orally about the Woodland, Plains, and Southwest Indians from a database format.

  6. Lesson 2 Sol Objective: 2.4 –TSW develop map skills by locating the regions of the Powhatan, Sioux, and Pueblo Indians on U.S. maps. Lesson 2 Without Technology: TSW color areas of the United States to identify where each Native American group lived. Lesson 2 Technology-Infused: As a class, we will visit the school’s computer lab and go to the web site: http://www.germantown.k12.il.us/html/culture.html We will observe the locations of the different Native American cultures.

  8. Lesson 3 Sol Objective: 2.8 NQ- TSW create visual or other sensory images from text during and after reading. Lesson 3 Without Technology: TSW use index cards to create a picture postcard of their favorite Native American shelter (home). Lesson 3 Technology-Infused: TSW use a drawing program to create a picture of their favorite Native American shelter (home).

  9. Lesson 3: Student Sample Draw your favorite Native American home.

  10. Lesson 4 Sol Objective: 2.9 NI- TSW write simple paragraphs, and reports. Lesson 4 Without Technology: The students will write a persuasive paragraph. The persuasive paragraph will try to persuade someone to live in their choice of Native American shelter. The paragraph needs to be at least 5 sentences. Lesson 4 Technology-Infused: The students will use a word processing program to write their persuasive paragraphs.

  11. Lesson 4: Student Sample Write a 5 sentence paragraph about your favorite Native American home and why someone should live there.

Extra Credit Lesson 5 Sol Objective: 2.2- TSW compare the lives and contributions of American Indians (First Americans) with emphasis on the Powhatan of the Eastern Woodlands, the Sioux of the Plains, and the Pueblo people of the Southwest. Lesson 5 Without Technology: On a worksheet the students will use a concept map format to compare the differences between each Native American group. Lesson 5 Technology-Infused: TSW use the concept map in drawing to fill in the information about each Native American group: Homes, Occupations, and Transportation.

  13. Extra Credit Lesson 5: Student Sample Fill in the circles with the correct information about the Native Americans.

  14. Extra Credit Lesson 6 Sol Objective:CT 2.2N- TSW develop basic technology skills. Lesson 6 Without Technology: The students will be given a paper/pencil test. They will draw a line to connect the object with the appropriate picture. Lesson 6 Technology-Infused: The students will individually be given time to take the computer vocabulary test. They will use the mouse to drag the words to their appropriate pictures.

  15. Extra Credit Lesson 6: Student Sample Use the mouse to match each vocabulary word with its correct picture.
