  5. Copy these notes: • A complement is a word or word group that completes the meaning of a verb. • A complement can be a noun, pronoun, or adjective. • Ex: Aunt Edna looks happy and relaxed. Which words complete the meaning of the verb? First, what is the verb?

Next, identify the predicate of the sentence.** • Ex: The surface felt sticky. • Sticky describes the surface—which is the subject of the sentence.

  9. Copy these notes: As a class, identify the subject complements: • How kind he is! • The winter seemed especially mild and sunny. • Mark Twain’s real name was Samuel Clemens. • I know what a treat this is for her.

  10. Copy these notes: • Subject complements come in two forms: predicate adjectives and predicate nominatives. • A predicate adjective is an adjective in the predicate that modifies the subject. • Ex: The soup is hot. • What is the subject? Where is the predicate? What word is in the predicate that talks about the subject?

  11. Copy these notes: • A predicate nominative is a word or word group that is in the predicate and that identifies the subject or refers to it. • Ex: Has she become a dentist? **Hint: What is the subject? What is the complete predicate? Where is the word that identifies or restates the subject?**

(a verb that transfers action) Transitive verbs MUST have another word in order to make sense. • Ex: The bookshelf holds. this is a fragment • The bookshelf holds books. now it is a sentence~!
