  1. Visual Document #1 Subject: 19th Century Imperialism & Resistance 20th Century Intent & Bias

  2. KHARTOUM(1966)

  3. Background • Who: The English, the Egyptians and the Sudanese. • Key Characters: • General Gordon--theBritish General sent to solve the situation in the Sudan…. • MuhammadAhmed--the Mahdi--the religious leader who believes his form of Islam is the only true form. He wants to rise up against not only the British but the Muslim government of Egypt as well…. • Khalil--Gordon’s manservant, a minor character but important for our discussion of intent, message, meaning and bias. Observe these characters carefully!

  4. Background • What: The Egyptians need British help to control Sudan (once their territory). The Mahdi wants to cast out the English, and the Egyptians, and then move on to conquer one Islamic State after another…

  5. Background • Where: Sudan, South of Egypt. (Modern Day Connection: What region of Sudan has received much media attention over the past several years?) • When: 1884-1885

  6. Background • How: • The British use the technological advances that have allowed them to achieve imperial success around the world (examples?) to try to maintain control over Sudan. • The Mahdi inspires faith in his people so they can face the technological superiority of the British(Similar to what other African movement?). They also use whatever technology they win from the British and Egyptian soldiers they defeat…

  7. Scenes & Challenge • Scene One: Gordon’s arrival and Face-Off #1 • Scene Two: Face-Off #2 and the Final Battle. As you watch, pay careful attention to all the people depicted in the film!! Challenge: Something about this film is not true--What is it?

  8. Final Questions • Who does the director want you to think is more enlightened: the Mahdi or Gordon? What evidence do you have for your opinion? • Who do you think is more enlightened? What is the evidence for your opinion? • Why did I point out Khalil as an important character? What was my intent? • Is Gordon willing to take up the White Man’s Burden? Why do you think so? • What would you do if you were in Gordon’s shoes? The Mahdi’s? Please explain.
