How will I be graded? • By your homework, class work, projects, quizzes, essays, and tests • Projects, Tests, Essays, and Readers Responses = 100 points each • AOTWs = 50 points • Quizzes = 20 points • Classwork = 10 points • Formative Assessments = checked off • Grades will be given out in Interim Reports every 4 ½ weeks • Bonus points are available 

  17. Classroom Guidelines

  18. Guideline #1 • Be in your assigned seat and begin working on the warm-up on the board before the tardy bell rings. • Warm-up Worksheet

  19. Mrs. Richardson’s Reading Retreat • Warm-up: Journal “If I could have wings for a day, I would…” • Objective: Students will understand the class and procedures.

  20. Guideline #2 • Bring ALL classroom books and materials to class and take them with you when you leave. • Blue/Black ink pens and pencils • Special Pencil rule

  21. Guideline #3 • Follow all directions the FIRST time they are given.

  22. Guideline #4 • Treat each person in this room with respect and dignity.

  23. Guideline #5 • Follow all procedures and policies as outlined in the DRMS and Wake County Schools student handbook.

  24. Special Guideline • This classroom is a “No Whining Zone”. That means there will be no whining for any reason. • Everything I do is in your best interest, so please… respect the “No Whining Zone” guideline.

  25. Guideline Infraction Notice(Within the Same Class/Day) • Warning • Silent Lunch and Parent Phone Call • In Team and Parent Phone Call • Go to the Front Office with a Write-Up and Parent Phone Call

  26. 8th Grade Team Policies • Gum: • Do not have this at any time • Cell phones: • Lock them in your lockers • Special Rule for Cell Phones • Remind 101 and other “special days” when technology is needed in the room • Book bags: • Put these in your lockers • 1st Period: Draw string bookbags are ok for gym class

  27. Following Guidelines will result in… • Verbal Acknowledgement • A stress-free learning environment • A pleasant and orderly atmosphere • And… SPLASH TICKETS!!!

  28. SPLASH Ticket Prizes • Buy rewards from the cart at lunch • Earn team SPLASH awards for good behavior!

  29. Severe Clause • Any student who uses profanity, fights, damages school property (this includes property of the teacher and of other students), or is disrespectful (as defined by the teacher) will be sent to the office IMMEDIATELY.

  31. Entering the Room • Please enter quietly • Have a seat • Take out your materials • Review the agenda • Begin opening assignment

  32. When you are tardy… • Enter quietly • Show me your SIGNED pass to class • Take out your materials

  33. Getting Your Attention • I will: • Stand at the front of the class • Raise my hand and say “Give me three” • Wait for everyone to be quiet and raise his/her hand as well • Begin speaking

  36. Paper Heading • MLA Format • John Smith • 1st Period • 07/30/2013 • Place on ALL assignments • Write this at the TOP of your paper on the RIGHT-HAND side

  37. After an EXCUSED absence: • Go the “Make-up Work” folder (at the front of the room) and find the day of the week you were absent • Take the Make-up Work/any other hand-outs with your name on them • You are responsible for making up your work

  39. What to do next Activities • Work on unfinished ELA assignments • Read your DEAR novel • Work on your Article of the Week • Start on tonight’s homework • Complete Bonus Points assignments • Check-out Mrs. Richardson’s “Now I’m Done” Book Shelf

  40. Scheduled Check-outs • Please let me know as you enter the classroom • I will be at the door as you enter • Quietly raise your hand to get my attention • Pack your materials and leave at the scheduled time • If it is an emergency, quickly get my attention and I will assist you

  41. Agendas • Use these to write your homework down EVERY day • Yes, even if the homework is “Nothing” • I will check these as you leave class each day

  42. What’s the Hall Pass Look Like? • Your agenda is your hall pass • No agenda= No hall pass • No hall pass= You do not go anywhere

  43. Turning in Papers • Pass to the center of your group • Mrs. Richardson will come around and collect your table’s work

  44. Where are the OUTBOX and Make-up Work Folders?

  45. Classroom Discussions • PLEASE participate • I want to hear what you have to say • Make all questions and comments relevant to the current topic/situation • If your question is off the topic, please write it down and ask later

  46. Bathroom Breaks, Locker time, and Office Visits • Go before class begins • In case of Emergency: • You can leave class if there is an extreme emergency

  47. Food… mmmm… I’m Hungry • Leave all food in your lockers or the cafeteria • NO FOOD in the classrooms for any reason

  48. Lunch • We will line up as a Track (Ahead of the other two Tracks on the 8th grade hall) • Walk in a single file line down to the Cafeteria • Get in line to get your lunch • We sit on the side of the Cafeteria closest to Courtyard

  49. Lunch: Fast Passes • Take a Fast Pass from the board • Fill out Sign-out sheet • Name • Number of Fast Pass you have taken • Reason for coming back to class • First to go through Lunch Line • Go straight to my classroom • Sign-in in the “Lunch Fast Pass” Notebook near the door

  50. Moving around the room • You must ask permission • (Raise your hand to ask permission) • Do not ask during a classroom discussion unless it is an emergency
