  1. 3 Famous Mathematicians By: Tyler Stephens

  2. Mohammed ibnal-hasn (alhazen) ` Abu Ali’ • He was born in 965 • He died in 1039 • He live in Iraq first then he went to Egypt • He contributed to math, optics, and astronomy which eventually influenced other famous people.

  3. Information • Hes been called the best scientist of the middle ages. • His book of optics has been called the most important physics text prior to newton. • Other achievements in optics include improved lens design. • An early exploration for the rainbow. • He also did experiments on visual perception. • In a famous leap of over-confidence he claimed he could control the nile river. • Alhazen has been called the “Father of modern optics” the “Founder of Experimental Psychology.

  4. More Information • In number theory, Alhazen worked with perfect numbers. • He introduced the Power Series Theorem. • He solved Alhazens Billiard Problem (originally posed as a problem in mirror design). • Alhazens attempts to prove the Parallel Postulate make him one of the earliest mathematicians to investigate non-Euclidean geometry.

  6. Isaac (Sir) Newton • He was born in 1642 • He died in 1727 • He was born in England • This genius began revolutionary advances in mathematics, optics, dynamics, thermodynamics, acoustics and celestial mechanics.

  7. Isaac • He is famous for his three laws of motion (inertia, force, reciprocal action). • Was the first person to conclude that the ordinary gravity we observe on earth is the very same force that keeps the planets in orbit. • He observed that white light is a mixture of all the rainbows colors. • Newton also designed the first reflecting telescope, first reflecting microscope, and the sextant.

  8. (Sir) • He applied calculus for several purposes: finding areas, tangents, the lengths of curves and the maxima and minima of functions. • In addition to several other important advances in analytic geometry, his mathematical works include the binomial theorem, his eponymous numeric method, the idea of polar coordinates. • He also advanced the power series for exponential and trigonometric functions.

  9. Newton • Newton is so famous for his calculus, optics and laws of motion, it is easy to overlook that he was also one of the greatest geometers. • He solved the Delian cube-doubling problem. • Even before the invention of the calculus of variations, newton was doing difficult work in that field.

  11. Caroline Herschel • She was born on March 16, 1750 • She died on January 9, 1848 • She attended Agnes Scott College • She lived in
