Generic Award Regulations (introduced 2011/12) The Generic Award Regulations apply to students on programmes leading to the following awards: • Taught Masters Degrees, Postgraduate Diplomas and Certificates • Master of Research • Professional Graduate Certificate in Education • Certificate in Education • Graduate Diplomas and Certificates • Bachelors Degrees, Diplomas, Certificates and Foundation Degrees • International Foundation Diploma • They do not apply to the Professional Doctorate, the MPhil/PhD or the BTEC Higher National Qualifications.

  5. GENERIC AWARD REGULATIONS Regulations 6 and 19 New Regulations were introduced about students’ engagement with their programme. This formalises the expectation that students will attend their programme and complete their assessments as expected, and explains the consequences of not engaging.

  6. GENERIC AWARD REGULATIONS Regulation 15.4 and 20.4 Undergraduate students are only permitted to repeat an assessment/examination at the first available opportunity if failed/deferred modules do not exceed 60 credits. (60 CREDIT RULE)

  7. GENERIC AWARD REGULATIONS Regulation 15.5 A student required to repeat a year of study no longer has the option of relinquishing his/her marks and receiving the marks awarded for the repeat year. All marks received during a repeat year will be capped at the bare pass mark.

  8. GENERIC AWARD REGULATIONS Regulation 15.6 If allowed to repeat assessments/examinations at the first opportunity a student must undertake all the assessments/examinations at that time (unless extenuating circumstances have been accepted). If the student does not undertake all the assessments/examinations, the opportunity will be forfeited

  9. Bachelors Degrees, Diplomas, Certificates and Foundation Degrees Regulation 9 • Failure cannot be condoned where AP(E)L has been awarded for more than 60 credits at that level. Regulation 13 • The University has introduced a new method of calculating Honours Degree classification. Two calculations will be carried out and the one which produces the best result for the student will be used.

Bachelors Degrees, Diplomas, Certificates and Foundation Degrees Regulation 18.1 The conditions for allowing a student to trail a failed module into the following academic year have been changed. The student is required to have attempted all elements of the assessment for the module; the student may be permitted to trail without having gained a mark of 20% or more in the failed module (previously this was a requirement).

  11. Regulations for Taught Masters Degrees Regulations 35-37 Regulations were expanded to clarify that the time permitted for the resubmission of a dissertation should not exceed the period for the original submission

  12. Regulations for Taught Masters Degrees Regulation 24 In order to pass a module, students must attempt all elements of assessment. This brings the requirements for postgraduate taught programmes in line with undergraduate programmes.

  13. Regulations for Taught Masters Degrees Regulation 25 A Postgraduate Diploma or Certificate may be awarded with a mark of Distinction where the student has a mark of 70% or more. This did not apply previously to exit awards.

Regulations for Taught Masters Degrees Regulation 28 (Condonement) • All elements of assessment for a module must have been attempted for failure in a module to be condoned • Failure cannot be condoned for an award of Postgraduate Certificate. • Failure cannot be condoned where AP(E)L has been awarded for more than 60 credits. • If students accept credits for a module through condonement, they will not be eligible to proceed to Part Two of the programme (dissertation). • Students have the right to a further attempt at assessments on modules where failure has been condoned, to retrieve the failure.

  15. Regulations for Taught Masters Degrees Regulation 29.2 (Trailing Masters) • A student may progress to Part Two trailing a failed module in the following circumstances: • 120 credits have been studied and • At least 100 credits have been passed and • The module is eligible to be trailed, that is, it is not a Research Methods module and is not specified in the definitive programme documentation as ineligible to be trailed

  17. GENERAL REGULATIONS Regulation 5.8 New regulation covering situation where student transfers from one partner institution to another or from a partner institution to a programme delivered here

  18. GENERIC AWARD REGULATIONS • Reg 15.4 - clarifies 60 credit rule applies to a combination of deferred and referred modules • Reg 22 - clarifies responsibility for confirming posthumous awards

Bachelor Degrees, Diplomas, Certificates & Foundation Degrees • Regulation 9.2 - Condonementregs clarified to cover 10 credit modules • Regulation 10.3 - Additional guidance introduced in respect of deadline for a student to advise if they want to take up re-assessment opportunity instead of accepting condonement.

  20. Bachelor Degrees, Diplomas, Certificates & Foundation Degree • Regulation 10.4 Introduction of a requirement that student must not have exhausted all attempts at a module before choosing to substitute the failed module for another optional module

  21. Bachelor Degrees, Diplomas, Certificates & Foundation Degree Regulation 13.3 • Clarification of the criteria for borderline rules on classifications. Explains that all three criteria must be met • For professional programmes a fourth condition may be added, above average performance on placement element

Regulations for Degree of Mphil/PhD by Research Thesis • Regulation 8.1 (d) • Where student conducts research externally to the University, she/he must spend at least six weeks at the University. A change was introduced so that part time students only had to spend three weeks at the University.
