NAQQAET VISIT 2013 THE NATIONAL AUTHORITY OF QUALIFICATIONS AND QUALITY ASSURANCE FOR EDUCATION AND TRAINING (NAQQAET) The National Authority of Qualifications and Quality Assurance for Education and Training (NAQQAET) was launched in realization of Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030, particularly, the National Education Reform Project. This Project aims to contribute to the sustainable development through the fundamental improvement of the Bahraini education sector that starts with the promotion and enhancement of the human capital’s educational and vocational skills.

NAQQAET VISIT 2013 THE NATIONAL AUTHORITY OF QUALIFICATIONS AND QUALITY ASSURANCE FOR EDUCATION AND TRAINING (NAQQAET) • There are four main units within the NAQQAET: • The Schools Review Unit (SRU) • The Vocational Review Unit (VRU) • The Higher Education Review Unit (HERU) • The National Examinations Unit (NEU) • National Qualifications Framework (NQF)

NAQQAET VISIT 2013 THE HIGHER EDUCATION REVIEW UNIT (HERU) The Higher Education Review Unit (HERU) is mandated to ‘review the quality of the performance of education and training institutions in light of the guiding indicators developed by the Authority’. The first cycle of reviews started in May 2008. • The main objectives of the Higher Education Review Unit are to: • Enhance the quality of higher education in Bahrain • Conduct program reviews within higher education to ensure that minimum standards are being met

NAQQAET VISIT 2013 THE HIGHER EDUCATION REVIEW UNIT (HERU) • Ensure that there is public accountability of higher education providers through the provision of an objective assessment of the quality of each provider and program (Review Reports) for use by parents, students, and the Ministry of Education’s Higher Education Council • Promote quality assurance in higher education through (i) facilitating capacity development workshops and related activities; (ii) liaising with the Higher Education Council, industry, business and other stakeholders; and (iii) identifying good practice where it exists and disseminating it throughout the Bahraini higher education sector • Act as an advocate for Bahrain higher education within the Kingdom, the region and internationally

NAQQAET VISIT 2013 NAQQAET VISIT • Purpose of Programs within college review • Provide decision makers in higher education institutions (Higher Education Council, students, parents, employers) with evidence based judgments about the quality of the learning program. • Support the development of internal quality assurance process with information on emerging good practices and challenges, evaluate comments and continuing improvement. • Enhance the reputation of Bahrain’s higher education regionally and internationally

NAQQAET VISIT 2013 NAQQAET VISIT • Steps in Programs-within-College Review Process • Prepare and submit a self-evaluation report (SER). • Site visit to each program offered by the college. • Review report for each program published by QQA. • Submission of Improvement Plan • Follow-up visits for programs receiving ‘Limited Confidence’ or ‘No Confidence’ judgments.

THE LEARNING PROGRAM 1.1 There is clear academic planning framework for the programme which shows that there are clear aims that indicate the broad purposes of providing the programme and are related to the mission of the institution and the college and its strategic goals. • The OLD Program Intended Learning Outcomes (PEOs): • DEPTH: The first PEO is in line with all the objectives of the university mission statement which embodies the university’s commitment to support and enhance the development process in Bahrain through supporting information technology programmes, including information systems. A strong foundation in information systems is an essential requirement for both the public and private sectors. • BREADTH: The university’s mission calls for the dissemination of knowledge to support the development process in Bahrain in all areas of industries, infrastructure, education, business and finance andhealth and environment. Information systems play an important role in this development The need to provide broad education to the Information Systems graduates as expressed in the second programme objective.

THE LEARNING PROGRAM 1.2 The curriculum is organized to provide academic progression year-on-year or course-by-course suitable workloads for students, and it balances between knowledge and skills, and between theory and practice. • Through the environmental and the social science courses such as business, management, mathematics and statistics courses, taken in the freshman and sophomore years, students typically gain these skills: • Quantitative skills, including mathematics and accounting. • Fundamental knowledge of economics management, accounting and finance. • Fundamental to advance knowledge in social sciences such as Arabic language, religion studies, foreign languages and Arts.

THE LEARNING PROGRAM 1.2 The curriculum is organized to provide academic progression year-on-year or course-by-course suitable workloads for students, and it balances between knowledge and skills, and between theory and practice. • Some of the skills developed by the information systems major include: • Proficiency in current technologies such as C#, Java, XML, Oracle, SQL Server, Microsoft OS and Linux/UNIX. • Skills in systems analysis and design. • Knowledge of hardware and software technologies. • Familiarity with database and data communication systems. • Effective written and oral communications skills, including public speaking. • Familiarity with computer concepts and applications.

THE LEARNING PROGRAM 1.2 The curriculum is organized to provide academic progression year-on-year or course-by-course suitable workloads for students, and it balances between knowledge and skills, and between theory and practice. • Other skills gain by the students from the IS programme in general is included: • Effective written and oral communications skills, including public speaking. • Key Information Technology skills needed in today’s business environment, plus a firm grounding in the major business areas in which these skills will be applied.

THE LEARNING PROGRAM 1.3 The syllabus (i.e. Curriculum content, level, and outcomes) meets the norms and standards of particular disciplinary filed and award and is accurately documented in terms of breadth, depth and relevance with appropriate references to current and recent professional practice and published research findings. . • The IS programme follows the ABET requirements and the AIS and ACM IS 2002 curriculum plan. • The IS programme implements the recommendations of the Quality Assurance and Accreditation Center within the University of Bahrain. • The center’s main objective is to monitor and improve the quality of educational practice within the university. This is done by continuously evaluating student’s learning with the aim of improving that and ensuring that the university and its academic programmes meet and strive beyond minimum standards. . • .

THE LEARNING PROGRAM 1.3 The syllabus (i.e. Curriculum content, level, and outcomes) meets the norms and standards of particular disciplinary filed and award and is accurately documented in terms of breadth, depth and relevance with appropriate references to current and recent professional practice and published research findings. . • Based on annual surveys and meetings conducted with the programme constituencies, and to satisfy the standard settings of ABET and AIS and ACM IS 2002, the department has proposed the IS Plan 2010 whichis running since the first semester of the academic year 2010-2011. • With the new AIS and ACM IS 2012 and to prepare for the second ABET visit, the IS department is incessantly developing its programme to implement the up-to-date developments and improvements to meet the international standards. Thus, the department is developing an improved IS programme to be introduced by 2014 to satisfy the AIS and ACM IS 2010 – Curriculum Guidelines for the Undergraduate Degree Programmes in Information Systems.. • .
