Exploring Field Biology: A Hands-On Experience with Insects and DNA Barcoding
In 2013, participants engaged in a dynamic introduction to field biology through various hands-on activities. The program featured captivating fly capture demonstrations, highlighting the challenges posed by environmental factors such as wind. Each week presented new opportunities to learn about insect species and their diversity. Participants utilized dichotomous keys for species identification and conducted bug identification labs using DNA barcoding techniques. Special thanks to the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario’s Malaise trap program for their valuable support in enhancing our understanding of biodiversity.

Now we wait… • To learn more about the species, diversity, sequence etc. • We can also; use dichotomous keys to identify the organisms we caught. • Complete the bug ID lab and apply DNA barcoding (we’re doing this today) -thank you Biodiversity Institute of Ontario Malaise trap program!
