  2. Welcome. Today, we are going to learn about Windows updates and how they affect the operating system and applications on the computer. We will also discuss a few Internet helper applications that often affected when Windows is not updated. Lastly, we will go through the steps necessary to perform updates on a Windows 7 computer. So, let’s get started.

  3. About Windows Updates

  4. About Windows Updates Windows Update helps keep a PC safer and its software current by retrieving the latest security and feature updates from Microsoft via the Internet. The service, also seen as Microsoft update, is a free service for registered owners.

  5. About Windows Updates Additionally, software that relies on Windows properties and programs, such as web-based applications using Internet Explorer, will quickly become unresponsive or troublesome to work in as the software continues to degrade.

  6. About Windows Updates Third party applications feel the effect of updates as well. As Microsoft improves their software, these smaller applications will need to follow. Internet helper applications such as Adobe’s Flash Player® and Shockwave®, and Java® Runtime all must subsequently update along with Microsoft in order to keep web pages that use their enhancements functional.

  7. About Windows Updates When any computer goes significant periods of time without being updated, it becomes vulnerable to multiple methods of external attacks including hackers, identity thieves, Internet worms and Trojan viruses.

  8. About Windows Updates In Windows 7, there are several ways to check for and manage updates. Traditionally, and still, you can find Windows Update in the start menu. But it can also be found in the control panel and by RIGHT clicking on My Computer and then going to Properties.

  9. About Windows Updates Windows Update is also now part of Action Center, which makes updating your PC even more convenient. To check for updates, just click the Action Center icon on the taskbar, then finding the Windows update icon. Windows usually requires administrative access (or rights) for installation. So before we proceed check to make sure you have this access.

To Check for Windows Updates using the Start Menu, follow the steps below. • Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button. • In the search box, type Update, and hit Return • Then, in the list of results, click Windows Update. • In the left pane, click Check for updates, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your computer.

If you see a message telling you that important updates are available, or telling you to review important updates, then you have updates either ready for download or installation. • Click the message to view and select the important updates to install. • This will bring up an update list in a separate window. Do not close this window, as you will need it for the next part.

  14. You will definitely want to install any important updates as well as the recommended updates. The optional updates are at your discretion. Important updates. Important updates help keep your computer more secure and reliable, protecting your computer and your privacy. These updates include security and critical updates, as well as reliability improvements. Recommended updates. Recommended updates help keep your software up to date and your computer running at its best. Recommended updates include software updates and new or improved features. Optional updates. Optional updates include updates and software that you can install manually, such as new or trial Microsoft software or optional device drivers such as printers, cameras, and other devices from Microsoft partners.

  15. To Install Windows Updates • Return to the window listing the available Windows updates. • In the list, click the important updates for more information. Select the check boxes for any updates that you want to install, and then click OK. • Click Install updates. • Read and accept the license terms • Click Finish if the update requires it.   If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

  16. To Install Windows Updates This will start Windows on its process to download and install the selected updates. Depending on how long it has been since updates were done, the update process could take a little as 5 minutes or as long as 5 hours. The object is to remain patient and allow the computer to update. Remember though, Windows update works behind the scenes, so you can work on other activities on the computer until it asks you to restart; at which time you should save your work and restart as requested.

  18. Setting up Windows Updates • Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button . In the search box, type Update, and then, in the list of results, click Windows Update. • In the left pane, click Change settings. This will bring up the Windows Update Control panel. • Under Important updates, click one of the following: Install updates automatically (recommended) Download updates but let me choose whether to install them Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them Never check for updates (not recommended)

  19. To Install Windows Updates • To schedule your automatic updates, next to Install new updates, select the day and time you want updates to occur. (Often this is set to a time in which the computer is not even on, like 3:00 am. This should be set to another time in which the computer will be on and connected to network services) • To get recommended updates for your computer, under Recommended updates, select the Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates check box.

  20. To Install Windows Updates • To allow anyone using the computer to make updates, select the Allow all users to install updates on this computer check box. (This applies only to updates and software that are installed manually; automatic updates will be installed regardless of the user.) • Click OK. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

  21. Wait! You’re Not Done Yet.

  22. Not Done Yet… As you work on the computer, be on the lookout for other update alerts from other applications such as the Internet helpers mentioned earlier. Each of these applications will post an alert in the Action Center. To update these applications, just click on their icon in the Action Center and follow the directions from there.

  23. Not Done Yet… Be sure to restart the computer when asked as it is a necessary part of the process. You have now learned why it is important to update your computer, how to update it and other applications, and learned how to adjust the Update settings to run when you need them to.
