  6. Reality Check… • Is your initial budget a realistic reflection of your expected resources? • It is possible to spend as little as $8,000 on a solar car and as much as $40 million…

  7. Reality Check… • Is the team ready for leading edge technology? • You don’t need the very best of technology to compete well here.

  8. Step 5: Fundraising • Construction cannot begin until at least some money is raised… • Expect to do fundraising all year long.

  9. Step 6: Educate the Students • Try to spend some time with your students teaching them to use the various tools involved in a shop. • Don’t forget safety equipment

  10. Step 7: Purchasing • Some parts have large lead times. For example, solar cells may have a lead time of almost two months. Order everything far enough in advance that it will arrive BEFORE you need to install it. • Don’t order parts if you can’t pay for them.

  11. Step 8: Construction • READ THE RULES!!! • Order of operations • Make a construction calendar and stick to it.

  12. Step 9: Testing • Ideally – Hundreds of miles, months ahead of the race • We do NOT recommend having your first test occur when you arrive at scrutineering.

  13. Step 10: Revision • Ideally – Make revisions a month or so ahead and RETEST it. • We do NOT recommend fixing it in the Hilton parking lot. • READ THE RULES!!!

  14. Step 11: Planning for the Race • Logistics • Liability Insurance • Race Registration • Solar Car Registration (with the DMV) • Driver Training • READ THE RULES!!!

  15. The Race • Scrutineering • April prequalifier in Louisiana • Secondary qualifier the day before the race • Only students may answer questions in scrutineering • Have safety gear and documentation ready • READ THE RULES!!!

  18. Budgeting • The Solar Car • Low End: $8,000 (CalSET) • High End: $40 million (Honda) • Start with a low end budget, increase it as extra money becomes available.
