Samuel Slater (factory diagram 336) Britain wants to keep the secret!!! • In 1789 • Samuel Slater was a 21 year-old apprentice in Arkwright’s textile mill in England. • Samuel Slater memorized the design of the machinery in the mill. • Slater disguised himself and traveled to New York. • While traveling on the Atlantic Slater drew the mill from memory. • Once in America, Slater recreated Arkwright’s mill for wealthy Quaker Cotton Mill owner, Moses Brown.

INVENTORS OF THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTON • James Hargreaves invented the Spinning Jenny. • Richard Arkwright invented the water frame and added it to the spinning jenny • Edmund Cartwright invented the steam powered loom for weaving cotton. • Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin. • James Watt of Scotland improved the design of the steam engine and made it practical for use • Oliver Evans built the first high-pressure steam engine for powering machinery.
