    1. AIM: Why is the Bill of Rights important to citizens of the U.S.? Do Now: In your opinion, what is the most important right you have?

    2. I. The original Constitution did not list basic freedoms of the people. In fact, several states, such as Virginia, refused to ratify the Constitution until they were promised that a Bill of Rights was added.

    3. II. By December 1791, the first 10 Amendments to the Constitution were ratified and became known as the Bill of Rights. III. The Bill of Rights was written to ensure that the National Government would not be able to take away peoples basic freedoms and rights.

    4. Task: After reading the Bill of Rights, pick five of the ten Amendments. 1. Explain what each Amendment means in your own words, then: 2. Explain why that Amendment is important to you. 3. Are these rights absolute rights? You can work with a partner.
