THE GREAT MAN-MADE RIVER PROJECT Jefara Green Mountains Hamada Sirt Murzug Kufra Mediterranean Sea Tripoli Benghazi Sirt Ajdabiya In a recent study conducted under the supervision of the UN Centre for Environment & Development in the Arab Region & Europe CEDARE, the Nubian Basin (of which Kufra is part) was estimated at containing 373.3 x 10^12 m3. If the neighboring countries extract water at a rate of 1380 MCMY it is calculated that the reserve would last 4860 years. Over extraction in these basins has resulted in seawater intrusion in the coastal aquifers with TDS levels reaching 7000ppm in the Tripoli region These basins contain 10,000 – 12,000 cubic Km. of economically extractable water

THE GREAT MAN-MADE RIVER PROJECT 03 October 1983 The General People's Congress held an extraordinary session to draft the resolutions of the basic people's Congresses, which decided to fund and execute the Great Man-Made River Project. 28 August 1984 The leader of the Revolution lays the foundation stone in Sarir area for the commencement of the construction of the Great Man-Made River Project.

( 20,000 farms ) About 100,000 existing farms will be supplemented with irrigation water from the project which will have great impact on their productivity and encourage the settlement of farmers and their families, hence a positive impact on the value of their property Algeria Sarir Wellfield E Jebel Hasouna Wellfield • The agricultural development projects are being carried out in three regions in Libya: • Benghazi Plains Region – net irrigated area 30,000 hectares 14,000 hectares to be developed as large farm projects. • Jefara Plains Region (Tripoli) - net irrigated area 80,000 hectares 1,500 hectares to be developed as large farm projects. • Al-Ghardabiya Plains Region (Sirt) - net irrigated area 20,000 hectares 5,400 hectares to be developed as large farm projects. Tazerbo • The agricultural development plan aims to: • Realize the highest possible rate of self-sufficiency in grain and fodder crops. • Increase the capital investment and job opportunities in the agricultural sector. • Produce raw materials for the food processing industry. • Encourage and support agricultural settlement. THE GREAT MAN-MADE RIVER PROJECT We can conclude that, adequate fresh water supplied by the gigantic GMRA project, have become an integral part of the infrastructure (including real estate) in all domestic, agricultural and industrial aspects, both in rural and urban areas, so as these areas grow, the need for infrastructure increase.

THE GREAT MAN-MADE RIVER PROJECT Sources for Project Financing The project is financed from the following sources:- - Law (10/83) revenues. - The revenue gained by selling water produced by the project’s System. - What is annually allocated in the country’s development budget, loans and financial facilities.

THE GREAT MAN-MADE RIVER PROJECT Fees (indirect taxes) , established by Law no (10)/1983 • Fees on documentary credits and money orders. • Fess on selling fuel derivations. • Fees on commerce , trade and industrial licenses. • Fees on selling local and imported Tobacco and Cigarettes. • Fees on international travel tickets.

THE GREAT MAN-MADE RIVER PROJECT PROJECT STATISTICS Total No. of Pipes 585,296 Volume of Trench Excavation 240 Million M3 Total Weight of Cement 6.9 Million Tonnes The length of pre-stressing wire used in the project is equivalent to 220 times the circumference of the earth . The total number of wells is 1,350 The amount of aggregate used in the project is sufficient to build 16 pyramids the size of the Great Pyramid. The cement used in the project is sufficient to construct a concrete road from Tripoli to Bangkok
