  2. Agreement • Adjectives in French have to agree in: • number • singular • plural • gender • masculine • feminine

  3. Agreement • To make an adjective plural (just like you do with a noun), you usually add –s. • le classeur vert  les classeurs verts • To make an adjective feminine (just like you do with a noun), you usually add –e. • vert  verte

  4. Agreement • If a noun or an adjective already ends in an –s, DON’T add another –s. • les classeurs gris_ (NOT griss!!) • If a noun or an adjective already ends in an unaccented–e, DON’T add another –e. • la gomme rouge_ (NOT rougee!!)

  5. Irregular Adjective Agreement • Some adjectives follow an irregular pattern: • Two colors never add an –e or an –s: • orange • marron

  6. Adjective Placement • Unlike in English, colors and many other adjectives go AFTER the noun they describe. • un ordinateur bleu • une calculatrice rose • des baskets blanches • cette montre verte • ces sacs à dos marron
