  1. Celebrating Our RedemptionEphesians 1: 7-10 • The Bible uses many different words to describe God’s salvation. • Reconciliation • Justification • Rescue • Deliverance • Redemption • What does redemption mean to you?

Ephesians 1: A doxology of praise and worship • Incredible blessings we have because of our identity in Christ. • A summary of God’s Salvation Plan: • The Father – the source of all blessings(v.3); He adopted us into his family (v.4,5) • A Celebration of Our Adoption • The Son – the agent of all the blessings, who gave his life for our salvation (v.7) • A Celebration of Our Redemption.

  4. The Spirit – the seal of our salvation (v.13); the guarantee of our inheritance of eternal life (v.14) A Celebration of Our Inheritance. Our Redemption in Christ: • The Source of Our Redemption • The Significance of Our Redemption

  5. 1. The Source of Our Redemption Ephesians 1:7 [NIV] – “In him we have redemption through his blood.” The roots of the concept of redemption go back to the Old Testament. Redemption  purchasing or buying back an item or even a person Ruth: Boaz redeemed the land that belonged to Ruth’s dead father-in-law giving him the right to marry Ruth. A family member could buy a slave back and give him his freedom again.

God delivering His people from their own bondage in Egypt. 2 Samuel 7:23 [ESV] – “And who is like your people Israel, the one nation on earth whom God went to redeem to be his people, making himself a name and doing for them great and awesome things by driving out before your people, whom you redeemed for yourself from Egypt, a nation and its gods?”

  7. Redemption “the release from something that is holding us in bondage through the payment of a price.” Christ’s sacrifice on the cross purchased our freedom from sin that enslaves us • This redemption is available to YOU here today, if you put your faith and trust in Christ for your salvation. • John 8:34 [ESV] – “Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin.”

  8. We live in a culture that teaches us that “nobody can tell me what to do” Sin: brings our natural selfishness to the surface. Our selfish nature separates us from God. God values us! • Psalm 72:14 [NLT] – “He will redeem them from oppression and violence, • … for their lives are precious to him.” He was willing to free us from the bondage of sin by “buying us back”

The price: Ephesians 1:7 [NIV] – “In him we have redemption through his blood.” Hebrews 9:22 [ESV] – “…without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.” The shedding of blood is a reference to death  the price that had to be paid for sin. Romans 6:23 [ESV] – “For the wages of sin is death…” 1 Peter 1:18 [NIV] – “For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed…”

  10. 1 Peter 1:18,19 [NIV] – “you were redeemed from the empty way of life…with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.” Redemption involves giving a life for a life. Old Testament  animal was killed - sacrificed for the sins of the people. Animal’s blood could never cleanse the people from their sin. Hebrews 10:4 [ESV] – “For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.”

  11. Sacrifices pointed to the coming of a Messiah – the perfect sacrifice would pay for all our sins. Hebrews 9: 12-14 [NLT] – “With his own blood—not the blood of goats and calves—he …secured our redemption forever. Under the old system, the blood of goats and bulls …could cleanse people’s bodies from ceremonial impurity. Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God…Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins.”

  12. 2. The Significance of Our Redemption Ephesians 1:7 [NIV] – “In him we have redemption …the forgiveness of sins.” a. Forgiveness Forgiveness is the blessing that flows out of our redemption in Christ. 1 John 1:9 [ESV] – “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Jeremiah 31:34b [ESV] – “For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

Grace • God continues to lavish us with His grace • Ephesians 1:7b,8 [NIV] – “…in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us…” • Grace means “unearned favour” • Because of our sin, we all deserved to be condemned to hell • Because of God’s grace – we don’t get what we deserve, we get what we don’t deserve – forgiveness. • “When God gives – “in accordance with the riches of [his] grace” he gives from his unlimited treasure-house.” R. Spiritual Discernment • Ephesians 1:8 [NIV] – “In him we have redemption…with all wisdom and understanding.” • Spiritual wisdom is only available to the redeemed in Christ. • 1 Corinthians 1:24 [NLT] – “But to those called by God to salvation, both Jews and Gentiles, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God.” • James 1:5 [ESV] – “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”

All of these blessings are part of God’s amazing salvation plan. • One day, Christ will return and will reign over all of heaven and earth. • Ephesians 1:10 [NIV] “…to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment—to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ.” • God’s ultimate purpose in redemption is to bring all things under the rule of His Son. • We wait for that day with great hope and with great anticipation.

  16. With great blessing comes great responsibility. • We experience God’s forgiveness, His grace, and His wisdom and understanding. • As adopted children of God, we are called to be imitators of our Father. • Being redeemed means have the must… • extend the same forgiveness to others • Colossians 3:13 [NIV] – “Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”

  17. be overflowing with the same kind of grace God has lavished on us • apply godly wisdom and discernment to live according to His Word. • Ephesians 4:1 [NIV] – “To live a life worthy of the calling you have received” • We are redeemed by the blood of Christ •  blessed with forgiveness, grace, wisdom • Let’s live and act like redeemed people.
