The Power of Image is an eTwinning project undertaken by two partner schools, within the framework of the Safer Internet Day 2007 competition. • The project aims at: • diagnosing and raising awareness of threats carried by using the Internet • making young Internet users feel responsible for submitting pictures on websites • showing the global dimension of the problem • breaking the cultural and language barriers between collaborating schools • Between 1st Dec 2006 and 4th Feb 2007, the project participants aged 16 - 18 took part in the following activities monitored by their teachers: • workshops with brainstorms , discussions and personal reflections • doing the surveys ( prepared by both schools and exchanged) among teenagers and adults • comparing the results of both surveys in graghs with comments • on-line meetings between teachers and students of the partner schools • collecting the results in the English language multimedia presentation

Do you have to ask your parents if you want to check your e-mails? Do you watch immoral files ? do you download them? What kind of pictures do you download? How do you protect your computer from viruses? Do your parents know what you download from the Internet? Do you feel save in the Web? Will the Internet be safer in the future? How much time a day do you spend with your computer? Do you submit yourphotos in the web? Have you ever distorted someone’s photo and submitted it without permission? Do you think making friends through chatting is dangerous? What kind of pictures attract your attention most?

  18. Comments on the Greek / Polish survey The questionnaire was completed by 170 people, 56 of whom are adults of different professional backgrounds, whereas 114 fall into the 16 to 18 age group. Half of the interviewees have been Internet users for the last five years: the former refer to the web for work-related research, while the latter prefer to use it for entertainment. Furthermore, approximately 127 of the sample population openly discuss about cyber-crime with their parents or children in their respective families. Pictures generate thoughts and emotions alike, to users of all age groups. Yet, it is obvious that violent behaviour patterns can be instilled more frequently among youngsters than their adult counterparts. After all, this is the reason why adults have installed filter/ scanning software in their home PCs in order to protect their children against indecent sites.

  19. Nonetheless, the overwhelming majority of users have been exposed to sites with unsuitable or offensive content. Most of the sample population believe that paedophiliac incidents occur mostly in developed countries. Fortunately enough, very few youngsters and even fewer adults still consider it impossible to download data to one’s laptop from somebody else’s mobile phone unknowingly. All in all, the final conclusion is quite optimistic: the world, particularly teenagers, surf the Internet safely. This is attributed to prevention and critical judgement, which are both catered for both at home and at school.

  27. Comments on the Polish survey The survey – The Power of the Image – aims at diagnosing the level of awareness of possible threats while submitting or downloading photos on the Internet. There are seven questions in the questionnaire. Almost 500 people from four age groups have been questioned: * secondary school pupils 13 - 16 * upper-secondary school pupils 16 - 19 * students 19 - 25 * adults above 25 years old ( teachers, clerks, physical workers) As presented in the graphs above, most of thequestioned use the Internet and three quarters pay more attention on pictures than on the texts. Almost everyone admits that an attached photo encourages them to read the article and has a considerable influence on their emotions. That would prove how great power a photo has. Over a half would like to have their photo published on the web, but a great deal of those who agree come from the youngest Internet users. Therefore, the awareness of the youth concerning the web threats is not satisfactorily high. In the adults’ group, a few would agree on such a publication. Most of inquired people claim that an unauthorized photo publication should be punished.

Comments on the Polish / Greek survey Comparing identical surveys carried out in Poland and in Greece, the following can be inferred: * almost all responders in both countries use the Internet * for most, but 10 % more Poles than the Greeks, the text is more important than photos or images, even though they admit the photo attached to the text encourages them toread it * the Poles interpret the images more emotionally than the Greeks, who, as a conclusion,seem to be less emphatic * as far as the agreement on publishing ofour own effigy on the Internet is concerned, it drastically differs: 70 % of Poles say 'yes' whereas similarpercentage of Greeks say 'no'. This fact evidences that the Greeks are far more aware ofthe web threats. * comparable majority of pollees in both countries vote for authorization of the photo before submitting it in the media.

Photos sometimes distract us • Not everyone is interested in photos • Photos presenting violence affect children and can result in aggression and violence • They can be used in a wrong way • Photos containing pornography go to unauthorized person • Websites with photos open longer 10 minutes left… Disdvantages of submitting photoson theInternet

  35. When you don’t safeguard your photos, they can be copied, altered and than published on other websites. Your photo may be used to commit forgery. The photos may be used in improper way, e.g. to make a photomontage. A photo helps you get to know somebody closer. The police can find a criminal when their photo is published You can find out what other people think about you You can be emplyed e.g. as a model.

  37. Hi, my name is Dominika. I was asked to write what I think about publishing my own photograph on the Internet and if it may have any negative consequences in the future. In my view, the photos on the Web are an excellent idea but we should always forsee the results. In order to avoid future manipulation , we ourselves have to be careful. Our own picture on the Internet has a lot of advantages. Owning to it, we are watched by much more people and we become more and more recognizable. We can experience a kind of fame. Moreover, we can use it in a correspondence with friends from other countries. I believe that with a little bit of common sense, there is nothing to worry about. With love.

  38. Hi, I’m Monika from an upper-secondary school in Przeworsk. What do I think about publishing my own photos on the Internet without my consent ? I must admit that my feelings vary. Some photos, or rather their contents can do a lot of harm later. For example, the photos of us in embarrassing situations could be used for blackmailing by our enemies in the future. On the other hand, the world is developing, the mess media are developing, the Internet is developing. The world is becoming a global village in which everyone knows everyone, so why not us? I would agree on submitting my photo on the site only after my authorization.

  39. Hi, my name`s Kamil. I`m a student at an upper-secondary school in Przeworsk. What`s my attitude to publishing my own photos on the Internet and possible consequences of this act? If the photos are not published against our will and they do not contain ambiuous (immoral) scenes which can be used against us in the future - I have no objections. Publishing the photos which present daily situations has become very popular. It facilitates the communication between people all over the world as well as it helps expressing the individual style of our life. It is obvious that dangers are commonly known and they exist in all areas of our life . Why should we be affraid of our own photos? By using a lot of different protections, we can eliminate the risk of using these photos in an illegal way. However, if we bacome the victim of e.g. the trick photos, we can defend our image.
