  1. Welcome to Chemistry Mrs. Schulze

  2. Class rules and procedures • Students will demonstrate respect toward themselves, others, and property. • No food, drink, or gum in this room • Exception- water bottles, but not at lab tables • Emergency exiting- turn left out door, then exit left at end of hall • “Secure all classrooms”- ignore fire alarm • “Secure all doors and continue instruction”

  3. Late= ½ absence (>15 min= absence) • 10 absences= no credit • Cell phones- if visible or audible, will be confiscated for period (longer, if repeat) • Dress code- • Don’t reveal bare backs, midriffs, or undergarments • Shorts, skirts, or dresses shall extend beyond the fingertips of the downward extended arm. • Avoid scented lotions and sprays

  4. What you will need • Textbook • Scientific Calculator (~$10) • 3-ring Binder (~$3) • I will post my PowerPoint slides on my page on Mahar’s website.

  5. Grading • Total Points 2000-2300 • Labs (25, at 25 pts. each) 35% • Homework 15-20% • Quizzes 10% • Tests 35% • Notebook 2%

  6. Happy Hal Did homework on time 230/230 Labs done on time 285/300 Did well on quizzes 132/152 Prepared for tests 350/425 Total 997/1107 90% Sad Sam Late homeworks 115/230 Sloppy/late labs 190/300 Poor quizzes 100/152 Poor tests 250/425 Total 655/1107 59% Two scenerios

  7. Chemistry Homework !!! “ Chemistry is not a spectator sport, you must become involved, and that means that you must do homework!” Linus Pauling - 1967

  8. Advice from former students • Ask lots of questions during class. • Pay attention, even during labs. • Take notes! You will need them. • ALWAYS do your homework. • Keep up with your lab reports. • Keep an organized binder. • Keep all your labs

  9. My goals for you • Learn chemistry • learn problem solving strategies • Discover how you learn best • Memorize this . . . • Why was the second one easier? • It was organized in a way that made sense to you. fjiwlsqin chemistry

  10. Chemistry • The study of the composition of and changes in matter.

  11. Matter • What stuff is made of. • Chemicals • Anything that has. . . • mass • inertia (resistance to change in motion) • takes up space • has energy

  12. Some questions addressed in this course. . . • What causes “brain freeze”? • What is the best way to purify water? • How can water striders walk on water? • What causes the different colors seen in fireworks? • What are some tests that can identify an unknown substance (like in CSI)? • Why do some substances not dissolve in water? • How are nuclear reactions different from chemical reactions?

  13. What we will study. . . • Proper measurement and lab techniques • The structure of an atom • The arrangement of the periodic table • The reactivity of elements • Writing chemical formulas and equations • Determining amounts of reactants and products • The behavior of gases • Acids and bases

  14. Nature, Chemistry and You • People need • Food, water • Clothing • Shelter • Energy

  15. Chemists have helped. . . • Reduce starvation • Preservatives • Fertilizers • Pesticides • Improve shelter • Shingles • Sheetrock • Insulation • Paints

  16. Improve clothing • Synthetics (rayon, nylon, polyester) make clothes cheaper, stronger, lighter • synthetic footwear • Improve our health • Medicines • Antibiotics • Vitamin supplements • Fire prevention • Forensics • Antiterrorism

  17. Develop and improve conveniences • Plastics • Foams • Vinyl • Alloys • Fiberglass • Used in cars and electrical appliances

  18. Develop new energy sources

  19. Annual US consumption of energy from various sources.

  20. Problems have also been created • water pollution • smog and acid rain • landfill dumps • hazardous waste sites • food containing chemical residues • nuclear waste

  21. Fields in chemistry • Organic- compounds with carbon • Inorganic- noncarbon compounds • Biochemistry- processes in living organisms

  22. Analytical chemistry- composition of matter • Physical chemistry- mechanisms of reactions
