  1. Romans 11:11-16Israel’s FuturePart 2

  2. Introduction God has not forsaken His covenant with Israel. God’s covenant with Abraham was unconditional. What is God doing with Israel during this present time?

  3. Romans 11:11-16I say then, have they stumbled that they should fall? Certainly not! But through their fall, to provoke them to jealousy, salvation has come to the Gentiles. 12Now if their fall is riches for the world, and their failure riches for the Gentiles, how much more their fullness! 13For I speak to you Gentiles; inasmuch as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry, 14if by any means I may provoke to jealousy those who are my flesh and save some of them. 15For if their being cast away is the reconciling of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead? 16For if the firstfruit is holy, the lump is also holy; and if the root is holy, so are the branches.

  4. Proof 1 – God’s Overuling Romans 11:11I say then, have they stumbled that they should fall? Certainly not! But through their fall, to provoke them to jealousy, salvation has come to the Gentiles. The first proof that God has not abandoned his plan for Israel. There is a contrast between stumbled and fall. To stumble indicates a temporary loss of footing or direction. The term for “fall” indicates a permanent and final fall.

  5. Proof 1 – God’s Overuling Romans 11:11I say then, have they stumbled that they should fall? Certainly not! But through their fall, to provoke them to jealousy, salvation has come to the Gentiles. Is Israel's problem with Christ permanent and final? Will Israel never accept God's Son, Jesus Christ, as the true Messiah? Is the spiritual fall of Israel to be forever?NEVER! God has overruled Israel’s stumbling in three different ways.

  6. Proof 1 – God’s Overuling Romans 11:11I say then, have they stumbled that they should fall? Certainly not! But through their fall, to provoke them to jealousy, salvation has come to the Gentiles. Way 1 God has opened the door of salvation to the whole world. The Lord's messengers went to Israel first, but Israel did not want to hear that Jesus Christ is the Messiah, the Son of God Himself.

  7. Proof 1 – God’s Overuling Romans 11:11I say then, have they stumbled that they should fall? Certainly not! But through their fall, to provoke them to jealousy, salvation has come to the Gentiles. Way 2 God stirs the Jews to be restored by provoking them to jealousy. God has not forsaken the Jews. The door of salvation is open to them as well as to the Gentiles. The Jews can look at true Christian believers and should see the holiness, love, joy, and peace of their lives; and the Jews can be stirred to receive Christ.

  8. Proof 1 – God’s Overuling Romans 11:12Now if their fall is riches for the world, and their failure riches for the Gentiles, how much more their fullness! Way 3 God assures a glorious restoration of Israel that will bring a rich period for the whole earth!

  9. Proof 1 – God’s Overuling Romans 11:12Now if their fall is riches for the world, and their failure riches for the Gentiles, how much more their fullness! Way 3 The term “failure” means loss, defeat, and/or injury. Israel’s rejection of Messiah resulted in her becoming impoverished spiritually.

  10. Proof 1 – God’s Overruling Romans 11:12Now if their fall is riches for the world, and their failure riches for the Gentiles, how much more their fullness! Way 3 If the spiritual fall of Israel led to the riches of salvation being carried to the world, and if the spiritual diminishing of Israel led to the riches of salvation being carried to the Gentiles... how much more shall the fullness (the restoration of Israel) bring the blessings of God to earth?

  11. Proof 1 – God’s Overuling Romans 11:12Now if their fall is riches for the world, and their failure riches for the Gentiles, how much more their fullness! Way 3 “Fullness”, means the completion or that which is filled. The idea is that the day is coming when God's plan and purpose for Israel will be completed and perfectly fulfilled. The day of Israel's restoration, will cause even a greater blessing to spread out across the world.

  12. Proof 2 – Paul’s Love for His People Romans 11:13-15For I speak to you Gentiles; inasmuch as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry, 14if by any means I may provoke to jealousy those who are my flesh and save some of them. 15For if their being cast away is the reconciling of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead? The second proof is Paul’s attempt to stir his people to be saved. Paul reinforces and glories in his ministry of being an apostle to the Gentiles.

  13. Keeping with God’s plan, Paul wanted to use His ministry to “arouse the Jews to envy”. He wanted to stir them to look at Christ and see what He had done for the Gentiles. Paul hoped that some of his kinsmen would be saved.

  14. The term “reconciling” speaks of restoration of relationship. It means both Jews and gentiles can have a restored relationship of joy and peace with God.

  15. Reconciliation also means that Jews and gentiles can be reconciled with each other. God has broken down the wall that separates us (Ephesians 2:13-18).

  16. Paul strongly believed in the restoration of Israel. The fact that he asked the question in verse 15 indicates his belief. He firmly expected Israel to be restored, and he expected their restoration to bring such a great revival to earth that it would be like the world moving to "life from the dead."

  17. When Israel accepts Messiah, it will usher in His Millennial reign. The curse will be removed from the earth and it will be returned to the Garden of Eden status. Creation is under the curse of death, Messiah’s reign will bring it back to life. What a glorious time that will be!

  18. Proof 3 – Israel’s Heritage Romans 11:16For if the first fruit is holy, the lump is also holy; and if the root is holy, so are the branches. The third proof is that the patriarchs give a heritage of holiness to Israel. God gives two pictures to show that Israel can never be totally or permanently rejected. Both pictures have to do with first fruits.

  19. Proof 3 – Israel’s Heritage Romans 11:16For if the first fruit is holy, the lump is also holy; and if the root is holy, so are the branches. Israel dedicated the first fruit of their harvest to God. By giving the first part to God, a man was saying that he was dedicating all his food to God. This offering of the first part sanctified the whole.

  20. Proof 3 – Israel’s Heritage Romans 11:16For if the first fruit is holy, the lump is also holy; and if the root is holy, so are the branches. The second picture is that of a little tree being planted and the sapling being offered to God. Every branch thereafter was looked upon as being sacred to God. It was not necessary to dedicate each branch separately.

  21. Proof 3 – Israel’s Heritage Romans 11:16For if the first fruit is holy, the lump is also holy; and if the root is holy, so are the branches. Paul is saying that the root, the first fruit, is the patriarchs. Israel holds a special place in God’s heart because of these men. As a result, the whole nation benefits from their dedicated lives to God, and the nation will be restored. Israel will be brought back to God because of the godliness of their forefathers and God’s promises to them.

  22. Proof 3 – Israel’s Heritage Romans 11:16For if the first fruit is holy, the lump is also holy; and if the root is holy, so are the branches. Notice the importance of Godly men (and women) to future generations. What is true in nations, is also true in families. Let us each dedicate ourselves to being the Godly leaders and influences to bear a Godly legacy to future generations.

  23. Proof 3 – Israel’s Heritage Romans 11:16For if the first fruit is holy, the lump is also holy; and if the root is holy, so are the branches. However, we must always remember that the people of a nation can be restored to God only through repentance, only by turning from sin back to God.

  24. Proof 3 – Israel’s Heritage Leviticus 26:40-42‘But if they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers, with their unfaithfulness in which they were unfaithful to Me, and that they also have walked contrary to Me, 41and that I also have walked contrary to them and have brought them into the land of their enemies; if their uncircumcised hearts are humbled, and they accept their guilt— 42then I will remember My covenant with Jacob, and My covenant with Isaac and My covenant with Abraham I will remember; I will remember the land.

  25. Personal Reflection What kind of a heritage are you leaving? You cannot change the past, but you can set goals for the future. If you have not accepted Messiah’s gift of forgiveness, it starts there, and He gives you the gift of the Spirit. As you yield to the Spirit, He will help you overcome the sin in your life and help you leave a Godly Heritage. The choice is up to you…
