  2. In Canada we have a: Constitutional Monarchy: Queen Elizabeth is the head of state. Canada’s System

  3. - The Queen is represented by a Governor General at the federal level. - The federal level is in Ottawa. - Our current Governor General is The HonourableDavid Lloyd Johnston. Governor General

  4. - The Queen is represented by the Lieutenant Governor at the provincial level. - The Lieutenant Governor for Ontario is The Honourable David Onley. Lieutenant Governor

  5. -  Federal Level: Location: Ottawa Canada’s government is divided into three Levels:

  6. Ontario Legislature Location: Toronto Provincial Level

  7. City of Cambridge The Mayor of Cambridge is Doug Craig Municipal Level

  8. The House of Commons The Senate 1st: The Federal LevelIs Divided into two houses

  9. Elected representatives called M.P.’s (Members of Parliament). The current elected MP for Cambridge is Gary Goodyear (Conservative Party) House of Commons

  10. Canada is: - Divided into different geographic areas      called Ridings/District/Seats.      - Each area contains approx. the same population      - Currently: 308 seats.

  11. People run as candidates to win a riding.They join political parties or are Independent • Canada’s top 5 political parties are: • Conservative Party- 167 seats 39% • New Democratic Party - 102 seats 30% • Liberal Party – 34 seats 18% • Bloc Quebecois- 4 seats 6% - Green Party- 1 seat 3%

  12. The Political Party - with the most people elected wins - forms the ‘government’ - leader becomes Prime Minister.

  15. - Created to protect regional interests across Canada. - Governor General, on the recommendation of the Prime Minister, appoints members to the senate. Role: - Consider/review all ‘bills’ passed by the House of Commons. - Suggest changes to bills before they can become a law. - Pass all bills (give approval) before they become a law. The Senate

  16. ·   Elected representatives called M.P.P.’s or Members of Provincial Parliament. · No Senate at the provincial level. Current M.P.P. for Cambridge is Rob Leone. 2nd: Provincial Level
