  3. Pittsburgh Landscape" was originally created as a guardrail for the terrace outside the home of G. David Thompson, a collector of modern art and president of Pittsburgh Steel in the 1950s. The forms and lines in the abstract composition suggest the rhythms and patterns of a dynamic landscape viewed from a distance, or perhaps from above. (David Smith was known to enjoy aerial perspectives.)
