The recovery of the DRE20 machine, positioned at a 45.5-degree angle, posed significant challenges due to the low bearing capacity of the surrounding material and the need for specialized techniques. Traditional recovery methods were deemed unsuitable, necessitating expert collaboration for a tailored solution. The recovery involved stabilizing the machine, excavating to level it, attaching winch frames for control, and ultimately winching it back to safety. The plan aimed to minimize collateral damage and ensure a swift return to operational status, with extensive repairs conducted afterward.

DRE20 Recovery • The Problem Con’t • Material in the area does not have a high bearing capacity. • Machine could not safely be recovered using traditional methods of material removal from under the tub due to the type of material and the angle of the machine. • In previous recoveries, machines had slipped along the centreline of the machine (ie Nose down, or ballast box down). • Initial meetings determined that traditional recovery methods were not able to be applied in this situation. • Initial Centre of Gravity checks determined that the machine required a restraint to be used to control movement. DRE20 Recovery • The Solution: • The recovery of DRE20 required the collaboration of experts in their field of Engineering. • The Recovery Method: • After the slip, the machine was stabilised and planning had begun on the method of recovery to meet the objectives. • Excavation to a level to allow DRE20 to sit level. • Attach winch frame and position dragline buckets as anchor points • Complete excavation under tub • Winch machine back to a level position to allow it to walk out under its own propel system • Repair machine as needed.
