  1. Prerequisites for Chem 101 • 1) Either high school chemistry or Chemistry 60 with a grade of “C” or better, AND • 2) A minimum of two years of high school mathematics or completion of Mathematics 125 (Intermediate Algebra) or its equivalent. • DESCRIPTION: Principles/laws of general chemistry with emphasis on calculations. Lab work is quantitative.

  2. Required Texts Textbook Lab Manual

  3. Read Your Syllabus! • It’s your contract for this class • It tells what and when for assignments, Quizzes, Midterm Exams and Final Exam. • It explains policies, procedures & conduct

  4. Attendance and Participation • Attendance is mandatory • Assessment of attendance and participation will be graded electronically using “Clickers.” • Pickup and return on same day. If lost, you must replace @ $30 each from Turning Technologies.

  5. Exponential Notation • A convenient way to express very large or very small numbers. • Avogadro’s number is 602214000000000000000000 or 6.02214 x 1023 • 0.001894 mi/ft or 1.894 x 10-3 mi/ft • Scientific notation is exponential notation with one integer left of decimal point.

  6. 300,000 0.00145 166054 x 10-32 101 1000. 3 x 105 1.45 x 10-3 1.66054 x 10-27 1.01 x 102 1 x 103 Convert to Scientific Notation

  7. Multiplication & Division • Multiplication • Multiply integers and add exponents • 2 x 10-7 x 4 x 103 = 8 x 10-4 • Division • Divide integers and subtract exponents • 2 x 10-7 ÷ 4 x 103 = 0.5 x 10-10

  8. Adding & Subtracting • Adjust exponents and units to same magnitude before adding integers. • 256 cm + 45.000 x 103 cm • 256 cm + 45000. cm = 45256 cm • 0.026 x 103 cm + 111 x 10-2 m • 0.26 m + 1.11 m = 1.37 m or • 26 cm + 111 cm = 137 cm

  9. Powers & Roots • When a number expressed in exponential notation is taken to some power, the integer is raised to that power and the exponent is multiplied by that power • (7 x 10-4 km)2 = 72 x 10-4*2 = 49 x 10-8 km2

  10. Logarithms • A logarithm is an exponent: N = 10x • 1000 = 103 therefore log 1000 = 3 • 100 = 102 therefore log 100 = 2 • 0.0001 = 10-4 therefore log 0.0001 = -4

  11. Find log of: 200 1849 0.1556 2.6 x 107 61 2.3 3.2669 -0.8080 7.41 1.79 Logarithms On You Calculator

  12. Multiplying/Dividing Logs • Because logs are simply exponents they are manipulated according to rules for exponents. • 103 x 104 = 103+4 = 107 • Log (3 x 4) = log 3 + log 4 • Log 3÷4 = Log 3 - log 4

  13. More on Logs • For an exponent raised to a power: • An = (10x)n = 10nx • Log 10nx = nlog 10x • Log 1/10nx = -nlog 10x

  14. Natural Logs • Are represented as N = ex = 2.7183x • N = 11.34 = ex • ln 11.34 = x = 2.4283 • The antilog of natural log 2.4283 = • e2.4283 = 11.34

  15. Graphing Functions • A straight line or linear equation is expressed y = mx + b • y is the dependant variable and x is independent • m=slope is ∆y/∆x • m=45-5/10-0 =40/10 • b=y when x=0 • b=5 • Y = 4x + 5
